Scuffing sound on deceleration

Hey all,

I’m working my way up to a cool “new member” post, but I actually need some advice before I feel my truck is worthy.

I’ve had a scuffing sound during deceleration for a few months, and it’s become a lot worse recently. I just had a 100k service, which included changing all of the fluids in the truck, and I had an Emu 2.5” lift kit and transfer case drop kit installed. The shop guys noticed it and mentioned it could be a pinion or axle bearing.

I’m not against going back to the custom shop for this, but I don’t know what I don’t know. Should I trust a reputable local custom shop to do this job?

I’m in Downey, CA a suburb of Los Angeles and my TJ is a 97. My local stealership seemed open to looking into it, I called thinking a certified Jeep tech might do this job quickest.

Thoughts? Advice? Jokes?

Thanks, 🙏

Michael

It appears I’ve either posted this question on the wrong forum, or I’ve broken a rule of some kind? Sorry about that if so. I’ll figure this out on my own.

Why do you think you've broken a rule? I'm very confused as to your last post.

Yes, it could indeed be a bad pinion bearing among other things. If it is, this isn't a hard job to do. The smart thing would be either take it to a Jeep dealer, or find a reputable Jeep shop (of which I am sure there are tons and tons in California).

Hey Chris, maybe I’ve been on Reddit too long, thought I might have made a mistake and posted in the wrong forum or broken a rule since the thread didnt appear to be viewed and didn’t fetch any comments.

Thanks for your advice, Jeep shops are more prevalent about thirty minutes (on a good day) south of LA county, where I live. That’s sort of part of the question: I can go back to the Jeep shop who helped me with the lift, but that means $60 of uber back and forth again. Glad to hear a Jeep dealer isn’t off the menu, as that’s where I’d prefer to go. We have a well rated Jeep dealer here in Downey.

While I have your attention: Great site! Thanks for all that you do.
