Service Ramp Suggestions?

Hi all,

I fit my Jeep work into short periods. I was thinking that I might get a pair of service ramps. Seems like a quick and easy way to get 6–8" of extra clearance if I have only 45 minutes to do a bit of work under the Jeep.

Any suggestions of good, tall service ramps?

I made ramps out of 2x12’s for my car, I sometimes use them for the Jeep

If they don't need to be portable, make them out of concrete. No jackstands needed.

I like this. Even though my only saw is a sawzall, this looks like something I could do.

When I built mine Home Depot cut all the lengths for nothing. I didn’t do the 45 degree cuts though.

Can you install a lift and that way you only need to do once.

I bought some metal ones for my car several years ago, needed to do some work on my F250. Pulled up on them and it flattened both of them.

Nowadays they have plastic ones (like Rhino Ramp) that have a 16,000 pound rating that cost less than those metal ones.

I’ve had no issues with the rhino ramps. I always set a couple of jack stands under there as a backup.

For those that use ramps with jack stands, are you just driving up the ramps and setting the jack stands as close to "high enough" as possible and putting them underneath something you hope to catch if the ramps give way?

30 or so years ago I built a wooden set similar to those in that link except the differences in length that I used were considerably closer and caused a very steep incline. I also never thought about putting anything on the bottom to keep them from sliding but it's not like I had a newly polished floor.

I made these. They work perfect. Kinda heavy, but they aren’t going to fail

Used to use my metal ramps a lot. Never thought about what they were rated at.
Older ones were pretty heavy and I think mine had an extra brace on each side. I don't see that on the newer ones.
Also, newer ones are probably made from cheaper (Chinese) steel.
