Should I downgrade my front axle?

I’m considering pulling the ProRock 44 out of my TJ and replacing it with a built XJ HP30.

My plans have evolved a lot over the years, when I bought the axle I had to replace my front that was bent in a crash, I had enough insurance money to cover it and it seemed like the right idea at the time, when I was building more of an off road rig on 35s.

Now, my Jeep is mostly street driven, with off-road use being more of a bonus than the primary purpose. I’m trying to keep weight down and improve ride/handling, and the ProRock is honestly more axle than I need for the way I use the Jeep. I also seem to spend more time trying to make it work in the space I have than enjoying it.

Current setup is 33s with no plans to go bigger, 4.88s, NP242, and eventually a stroker/turbo setup, so I’m not exactly building a stock commuter either. If I went HP30, I’d build it properly with the right gears, differential, shafts, brakes, etc.

Before I get too serious about it, what do you guys think my ProRock 44 would realistically be worth?

It’s about 10 years old but has less than 500 miles on it. It has the upgraded axle tubes, JK outer knuckles/unit bearings/brakes, Tie rod flip, and a Truetrac with 4.88s.

Full disclosure: I have done some grinding on the brackets for clearance during installation

Well the first question is how much more does that ProRock 44 weigh versus the HP Dana 30?

I don't think I'd bother, honestly. Seems like more work than it's worth and what do you stand to gain from it? I'm assuming that axle isn't full width and thus it's not going to appeal to the same crowd that a full width Dana 60 would.

I believe the full assembly difference is a little over 100 lbs, possibly closer to 125 depending on how the HP30 is built. The weight is definitely part of it, but honestly the bigger issue for me is the bulk of the ProRock housing and how much it limits uptravel on a TJ. I keep finding myself designing around the axle instead of the axle fitting the Jeep.

I’m not expecting the HP30 to be “better” in strength, just better matched to how I actually use the Jeep.
