Whatever you do, please don't do the typical, redneck man cave over done pathetic, trailer trash looking bullshit! It's tacky and looks cheap. Do something classy and sophisticated, no basement myself, but this is how I'm doing my den with a hidden gun room behind a secret bookcase door on one side and a walk-in humidor on the other.

I don't have any pics of this but a carpenter friend used to do a lot of basement renovations on the side, making offices and playrooms, and I liked how he framed and finished the windows. A lot of basements in the northeast have vent style windows that are approximately 32" wide x 16" high. He'd frame the room walls and would frame this vent window as if it were 32" wide x 32" high (approximately). He'd finish it with interior window shutters or even curtains across the bottom of the "window". This would give the illusion of a full window and make it feel like you weren't in a basement. In rooms that didn't have much light come in from the vent window he'd install a light behind the shutter. I hope I've explained this well. It really looked gave a different look to the room. This is the angle from the workout area. The bar post hides the metal post holding up the house beam. The bathroom is behind the bar on the left.
The closet on the left holds the movies and games, the closet on the right was the under stairs kid's room, now storage.
There's a storage room behind me and left with the furnace.

Trying to find clever basement designs is the only reason I have a Pinterest account. The wife talked me into it. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but it's actually quite handy. It's pretty much an app to bookmark photos that are awesome.
Here’s my basement that I finished myself. The only part I contracted out was the drywalling. I use any opportunity I can to talk about my basement that I did myself. Definitely one of my top 3 accomplishments I am most proud of. Took me about 6 months, working on it after work and weekends whenever time allowed.

Man that's great, I did something similar many years ago for the kids but was thinking longer term after they were gone. I don't have a basement so this is the family room but same purposes. I hired a guy to put the tiles down & while he was there I ripped the carpet out of the steps I ended up breaking two of them so I asked him what he could do; being a union brick layer you can see - the stairs came out so well I ended up adding the bar, the bricked up metal post, the half wall in the bathroom, the arch, & the hearth for the pellet stove. My kids beat the crap out of this room for years before they left, it's indestructible.
This is a shot from the couch, there used to be a giant tv straight ahead but I had to poach it for the living room when that one died; sadly this room doesn't get the use it once did.

I used the Styrofoam form he built to do this arch as a guide to make the bathroom door and the doors for the laundry room & closets, all in rough cut cedar planks
this bar saw a good bit of action in its prime, now it's basically the place I toss my car keys
prior owners converted the attached two car garage into this part of the family room, this was the ugly grey metal pole that holds up this side of the house, before it was hidden with bricks anyway

Other than the Eagles flag it is awesome...lol really an awesome job, like the balance of adult and kid's activities. What projector do you have mounted on the ceiling? I just put up an Epson 2150.
It’s funny because the eagles super bowl was the second big event I hosted in the basement. I felt like I was in “Field of Dreams”. If I built it, it would come!
My projector is an Epson Home Cinema 2045. I bought it about 3 years ago from Best Buy in a deal of the day. So far, so good.
I joined Home Theater Forum a number of years ago. A home theater is one of my goals, especially since we have a kiddo at home that we definitely can't take to theaters for at least a few years.
I can't really tell if it's actually active or not. Only about a handful of folks ever answer questions.
I was also looking into Arcade 1Up machines, but I keep hearing that they're really tiny.
