Hi everyone, I'm hoping you can help me diagnose (another) issue.
I've had a little problem with my 06 TJ whereby when I turn the key, I have to turn it REALLY slowly in order for the ignition to kick in and start. If I turned the key normally, nothing would happen (though lights, dash and radio would come on fine). I lived with it for a while as it wasn't really a problem, but recently I thought I'd look into it and appear to have opened up a can of worms and made it worse.
I had assumed it might be have been the actuator pin not making great contact (hence having to turn key slowly), but when I went to open it up to replace it, I noticed the pin was perfectly in tact. I didn't bother replacing it as I'd assumed the original part was better than my OEM replacement. However, when I packed it all back up and turned the key, whilst the lights and radio came on as normal, there was no click at all, not even when I tried to turn the key slowly. I then thought I might as well replace the ignition switch to see if that was the issue (even though my dash lights etc were fine) - I've just done that and now when I turn the key I get a really loud continuous clicky crank, like a machine gun going off. I thought it might have been the starter motor (though I'm not experienced enough to diagnose the exact issue) - but it sort of sounds like it's coming from toward the back of the engine. It does sound electrical to my untrained ears.
I thought it odd that it went from starting with slow contact, to not starting at all (without replacing anything), to now this when I've replaced the ignition switch.
Any help in what the noise is, diagnosis and possible fixes would be greatly appreciated.
