Stock rear disc problems

My 06 LJ with stock rear disc the caliper wont fully release. At first they were getting really hot i could smell them while driving i took the tires off and there were no brake pads left so I changed them and the problem worsened took the tires off again and both pads are touching the rotor calipers hoses and everything all “look” fine i was going to buy new caliper and hoses but what are the chances that both sides are messing up? “autozone expert” said its the rear portioning valve that they aslo dont sell. Is there a way i can trouble shoot the exact problem so im not just throwing money away another mod

First step is to do a full system brake flush. There's gunk somewhere in the line that is probably clogging something up.
Buy some DOT 3 fluid (DOT 4 is fine too) and flush all four calipers until the fluid is clear in all four calipers. Be sure to pump out and refill the master cylinder before flushing so you don't have to flush as much fluid. There are plenty of online guides to flushing the brakes.

Do the calipers release when the bleeder screw is opened? If so, there is probably a clog upstream of the calipers, and the calipers are not the problem. But if the calipers don't release when the bleeder is open, they are likely seized, and should be replaced.

RockAuto should have all of the parts you need cheaper than the auto parts stores. Stick with the more well known brands, especially for calipers.

I believe RockAuto carries the proportioning valve. If not, you can buy a used one from Davey's Jeeps or a junkyard. Car-part.com is useful for locating yards that might have the part on hand.

Black magic brakes also sells rotors, calipers, and regular or upgrade brake pads. If you're looking for an upgrade from stock, I recommend his pads.

I had a problem with my front caliper. Stuck and wore down the rotor could not even tell. Replaced rotor and pads and smelled as if I was riding the brakes. Found out my caliper was not releasing when my foot came off the brakes. Replaced caliper and problem solved.

Im going to flush the brakes tomorrow tell u what i find i already got the dot3 fluid and a bleeder kit it’s pouring down raining

Just took the bleeder screw out no fluids would drain from either one til i took it all the way out I couldn’t compress the piston even with the pad in for leverage the left piston looks its out a lot further than the right one

My Rubi had a quick pad replacement when I bought it. Within 50 miles 3 calipers locked up. Luckily it happened right in front of a repair shop. Bad fluid caused it. Cost me close to $1500 for all new calipers, pads, hoses, and a full flush. The crap in the lines was suprising. Could have done the work myself and saved well over $1k, but they didnt lock up in my driveway. So short story long, flush everything. Completely. And if you have a lot of miles on the original lines then replace them too. That should set you up for years without having to worry about your brakes again.
