Strange electrical issue on start up

Hi All -

I had a really weird issue on start up today. Turn the ignition key to “on” to check for OBII error codes. Stereo was working and on. No codes. Turned the key further to start the engine. 1998 Jeep TJ Sahara 4.0 started up fine. However, both stereo and turn signal stopped working. They did not work at all. I thought fuses might be blown. Turned the car off and immediately turned the Jeep back on. Stereo and turn signals work just fine. What is going on?

Sounds like a tired ignition switch at close to 30 years old .....

The ignition switch or the actuator, being tired as mentioned above, most likely didn't return all the way to "run". Next time it happens, gently turn the key back a bit and see if that fixes it. If so, probably a good time to replace the switch and the actuator.

Thanks Guys - if I were to replace ignition switch, do you recommend OEM? Is OEM still available? Can ignition switch be keyed to my current key?

It's actually 3 parts, the switch, the actuator which includes the steering wheel lock, and the key cylinder. Normally the key cylinder can be re-used.

This video explains it pretty well. Don't know if OEM is still available but I doubt it.

Had bad luck changing the tumbler out. It had intermittent wrong key fault. I’d recommend not changing the tumbler just the switch and pin part.
