so I've been looking for a while now and I haven't been able to find any information on this. what I want to know is, what is going to be the most cost-effective, most HP for what my engine can handle. I have a 97 tj with the 4.0 6cyl.

A supercharger will be the most cost effective way to gain more power.

There is no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

An engine swap (even a stroker) is going to be well over 8k if you want to do it right. A supercharger can be done for under 4k.

Do you have a manual or automatic? I ran a m62 supercharger on my 2003 with a 5 speed, then switched to a AW4 from a cherokee. Was way better with the auto. It would stay in boost between shifts with the auto.

I eventually went with a 5.9 magnum/ 46re auto. If you want 300+ hp, go with the v8. If 250 to 275 is enough, the supercharger is the way to go.

By the way, the supercharger is a weekend job. The engine swap including wiring took me about 2 months working on it an hr or 2 a night and all day on the weekends.

Engine swaps are not easy. There is always fabrication involved, and every swap is different.

I have less than 5000 total in my engine swap, but I rebuilt the engine and trans myself, fabbed everything myself ( exhaust, trans mount, etc). It gets expensive quick if you have to pay someone to fab and weld for you.

LS swap! There is a reason everyone is installing them in everything. The fuel economy wouldn't be bad either. But as mentioned before, if you don't need that much power, there are more cost effective options. Like every other mod, it depends on what your goals are and how much you want to spend.

Before I changed to larger tires and later taller gearing. I don't ever remember thinking wow! my TJ has so much power. Even with stock tires and ratios I always considered 4.0 power just barely adequate.

The only jeep even close to being properly geared from the factory was the 5 speed Rubicons and even the majority of people who do regear dont go as deep as they should.
