I'm having a complete re-evaluation about where I want to live the rest of my life. Not sure I've changed my mind. But certainly reconsidering what is out there.
MT has been at the top of my list for some time. But I'm seriously considering living in a better climate. I'm almost 60.
What can those that have lived or do live in Florida tell me about the state?
I'm considering the outer Tampa area. Maybe even as far south as Cape Coral. Or further north up the coast. I don't want to live in Tampa. Other than maybe Bradenton. More looking at coastal areas.
A few areas of concern:
Taxes.
Health, car etc insurance.
Real estate seems reasonable.
Cost of power.
Other costs?
Demographics. What areas around Tampa should I avoid? Meaning crime.
Are there better areas in Florida? I would prefer the gulf coast. I like saltwater fishing alot.
What am I not asking that I should be?
I’ll chime in about Florida. I grew up in Philly, 70s and 80s. FL is better than Philly, but most places are better than Philly, lol.
Florida is big enough to have a different environment depending on where you are. From the people, weather, traffic, insurance, etc. I spent 30+ years in Punta Gorda (Charlotte County), between Sarasota and Fort Myers. Punta Gorda is old (people wise). So if you are near 60 and want to feel young, Punta Gorda works. The southeast (Palm Beach south) is younger, but more crowded and more expensive.
Now, I split my time between Orlando and Daytona Beach, two distinctively different places. Orlando/Orange County is more liberal, but it’s run pretty good for being run by mostly democrats. Daytona Beach is a little weird, kind of liberal but still conservative enough, but the county goes pretty far west and gets rural and conservative. Luckly the Volusia County is mostly conservative, so that helps. I think both places do ok because of the influx of tourist money. Easy to run a place when there is lots of money. I found Charlotte County and Orange County had good schools. Kids went through both. The FL university system is highly ranked (and very affordable), despite what people from other States say.
Weather, it’s different in different places. I think Orlando is less humid than Punta Gorda. The fronts just don’t make it down south as much as they go through central FL. But summers do get hot and humid, everywhere.
All and all, someplace in Florida probably has what you are looking for (other than dry desert like conditions). City life, rural/farm life, beach life… it’s all here.
