A year or so ago the temperature control slider on my TJ stopped working properly. There had been some resistance moving the slider from the Right "heat" portion to the Left "cool/cold" portion for some time before things went wonky. While driving down the highway during the Spring I went to move the slider to the left, felt resistance in the usual spot, and then it felt and heard something snap/crack/or break. The slider immediately and quickly moved all the way left without any feel of being connected like it should. Since then it moves freely but the temperature is always feels it is in the highest "hot" location for the slider.
Fast forward to today after I replaced my fan speed resistor (separate issue that needed solved). Decided to try to pull the climate controls and see if I could watch what moving the temperature slider does.
First issue, unlike countless videos and posts I've seen I was unable to remove the climate controls all the way out of the dash. I was only able to get it out far enough to remove the green wire in the bottom corner closest to the glove box, the larger connection right above the green wire, and a connection on the rear of the unit closest to the steering wheel if looking at the unit as it sits in the dash. Any suggestions out there? Best I could determine there is a cable or tube that is either too short or is caught up somewhere as I definitely felt something holding things back.
Second and main issue, looking at the climate control unit I can see the slider moving freely, but can't see any loose cable or bent/broken pieces that would suggest something is unhooked. If I'm understanding things even remotely correct, there should be a cable somewhere that links the slider to a part that controls how much heat is let into the HVAC system. Is this right? If so where should I be looking to see if something is either missing, broken, or somehow bound up?
Originally this all seemed like a relatively simple job: remove climate control unit, maybe open it up somewhat, reattach a cable/metal piece or a plastic hook, then reassemble and reinstall.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Especially those with small words, pictures, and possibly even in crayon with stick figures (yes, feeling really out of my depth on this one).
