Thermostat question

Have a new to me 97 sahara. Leaking at thermostat. Have read a lot of threads here about it ..learning everyday. On to question..when it says to wet a gasket with water in service manual do you soak it, dampen it or just wipe with water? Thanks

I never did anything to mine. I just made sure the old gasket was removed completely by carefully using a razor blade to clean the surface.

I googled online about the gasket and one guy used water to wet the gasket then installed it with the correct torque spec.
 
if you wet the gasket and torqued to the correct spec and still leaks you might have a crack in the thermostat housing
 
Thanks all... got new housing . Barely. Leaking now had to use rtv. Going to redo sometime this week

If both mating surfaces are completely clean and no cracks, no RTV is needed.

I have also used a dry gasket over a dozen times..nono leaks.

I only use felpro gasket.

I have never heard of wetting a gasket, but I am old and perhaps out of touch. I tack the gasket to a scraped clean housing and mate it up to a scraped clean block. The housing can get pitted from corrosion, replace it if so.
 
I mentioned in another write up to dry fit the thermostat into the recess on the head and really look at it closely. I cracked two housings while torquing the premium Stant thermostat before finding out the O/D of the brass was just a few thou larger than the recess. It looked good going in and appeared to sit in properly but there was a slight overlap on the bottom where you couldn't see. It was enough to hairline crack the housings.

I lapped the O/D with some 320gr strip oxide.
 
Am I under or over torque setting at 15 ft/lbs

15 ft/lbs is spot on, which is just hand tight basically. No need to use a torque wrench for 15 ft/lbs. If you do, be very careful, because 15 ft/lbs is very, very little torque.
 
All bolts require a torque and they do for one of three reasons:

1) to apply an even amount of pressure over a surface (a cylinder head for instance)

2) to apply a certain amount of load to stop items from pulling apart (exhaust flanges for instance)

3) so to not over tighten and break something (a thermostat housing or its bolt)
