This Jeep is Driving Me Crazy!

I have a 2005 6 cylinder tj. I bought it about a year and a half ago with 84k miles on it. It now has 95k. About a month after I bought it the issues started. First I had to replace the catalytic converter. After several attempts to replace 02 sensors to check the cel to clear, I bit the bullet and replaced the cat system. Problem solved. Then, shortly after that I get check engine light for cam and crank sensor. So, I replace the opda. Problem solved. About 6 months after that I get a cel for cylinder 3 misfire.

Did the heat shield tsb fix. Problem solved. Then, a year later light comes on for cam sensor. Mechanic checked everything and said the cam was off by about 15 degrees, he adjusted it, but the cel came back for cam sensor. I found the old oem sensor I had from the old opda and replaced it with the crown sensor. Problem solved. Then a month later my Jeep starts to stutter and stall while idling, the cel would flicker as the Jeep stuttered, but no code stays stored. When I started the Jeep back up the light is off.

I then thought my issue was with the ecu. I sent it to G7 and they sent it back saying they fixed it and that a wire on the Jeep shorted out the a transistor on the board. I checked all wires looked fine. Reinstalled the ecu and the problem persisted. I took the Jeep to the dealership. They said the thought a wire on the engine wiring harness was stretching and cutting in and out, since Jeep doesn't make wiring harnesses for '05 Jeeps, they couldn't do anything but say that I should try to find a used harness off another Jeep, but hey, they weren't going to charge me. Haha what a load of shit. Thinking maybe I did something to the cam sensor wire connectors, I replaced the connector, that did nothing, so I took the Jeep to an auto electrician near me and they said they didn't think anything was wrong with the wiring harness.

They switched the fuel pump relay with the horn relay thinking maybe the issue was with the fuel relay. I picked up the Jeep and on the way home the cel came on and the Jeep went into limp mode. Checked the code and found it was for the cam sensor, again. Thinking maybe when I replaced the connector I did it wrong, so I did it again and the code went, but it was still stuttering and stalling. I brought it back to the shop. They checked and saw that the cam chain had a lot of play in it (they even sent me a video of how much play was there).

They replaced the chain and now the cel continues to come on for the cam sensor. I am at a loss with this thing, and my fear is that the gear on the came is worn from the bad opda. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for sticking it out and reading all of this. Haha

Geez and I thought my death wobble was a pain to figure out...

Wish I had an answer for you. Hopefully someone here does. Good luck!

Don’t worry about it driving you crazy...we could walk from where we are man.

Stay after it , these things are typically fixable and low headache.

I'd still lean toward a harness problem. Did the ECU rebuilder give you any insight as to what circuit got shorted? You might have smoked the repair as soon as you installed it.
Isn't the cam sensor just a Hall effect type? I can't see how that would harm a transistor. Check all your connectors. Sometimes a pin can start pulling out and make poor contact, but look fine from the outside.

It's problems like THESE that have caused ME to sell my 1994 YJ (mysterious, untraceable by myself and 3 mechanics) stalling out while idling or at speed, and my 2001 Isuzu Vehicross (mysterious, untraceable by myself and 2 DIFFERENT mechanics) stalling out while idling or at speed...

It seems that when a gremlin like this/these takes up residence in your vehicle, it really DOES take an exorcist to rid you of same! I truly empathize with you on this one, brutha! I wish you the very best, but fear for more of the same. As we used to say in New Jersey: "Sorry to hear about your vehicle fire." "Sssshhhh - that's NEXT week!"

Can a loose timing chain throw of the cam alignment? I am wondering if the loose timing chain threw off the cam alignment, then the alignment was fixed, but the loose timing chain threw it off again.

I wouldn't mind the headache of hunting down the problem if the Jeep wasn't my daily driver. I have been intermittently without a vehicle since August.

Sounds electrical to me. Find a schematic of the devices the cel is giving you and disconnect all connectors involved and clean them with a plastic safe contact cleaner. Make sure both ends are cleaned. I use CRC 2-26.

This might not apply to thes engines, but on nissans that are used in forklifts, a cam or crank position fault can come from a bad spark plug or faulty coil. The code is triggered during start up because they don’t see the notch quick enough, due to the engine struggling to start.
Take this with a grain of salt, it may not apply to Jeep engines.

use a meter that does continuity check, pin each wire out end to end and shake the harness, it may help you find the broke wire...

Demon has been exorcised!

So, basically replacing the timing chain fixed the stuttering and stalling, and the cam position sensor was a bad plug I used. My mechanic ended up just soldering the wires from the engine wiring harness directly to the cam position sensor. I drove it home about 15 miles w/ no issues. Unless, I post again in this thread considered THE DEMON EXORCISED

That's funny. I am originally from New Jersey. Never heard that saying, but it definitely sounds like something a Jersey thing. Haha

Taylor Ham, egg and cheese or Pork Roll, egg and cheese?

Generally to a native NJ guy it's Taylor Ham and I miss it. Time to order online again.

Nice! People call them electrical gremlins, but I'm with you in thinking that they are a little more evil.

I feel ya man I'm losing my mind over here.

I have a 2.5L 2000tj and I was pulling codes for either a bad CPK or can sensor.
Read some threads and watched some videos was recommended that I changed the cpk.
I did boom pulled the codes 2 days later then I noticed my distributor was super loose to move got it put back in the right spot and tightened up and run good for two. Three weeks
Last week I'm driving about 60-70 mph in 4th about 28k-35k rpms my Jeep like jumped kinda felt like a missfire and kept doing it every now and then when I accelerated.
Take it to my local buddy and Midas and we end up changing my whole distributor set up had 3 cracked plugs changed those as well.
Went home drove for a day and then boom did it again on the same amount of speed and rpms.

Taking it to them again tomorrow but kind of at a loss. Pffffft

@Zaythedad sorry to hear about all your issue. I certainly feel you. I am still in the phase where I am just waiting for the shoe to drop, not fully comfortable driving yet, even though the Jeep feels like it is running and driving much better now.

I loved the Seinfeld gif. My girlfriend and I are just about to finish re-watching the whole series. Man, that show is timeless.
