TJ Rear Trunk Cargo Rack?

I've seen this in my buddies 2014 and it covers his sub box, amps, etc in the rear cargo area.
I found one for TJ's but it requires the rear seat to be folded down.
Not exactly practical for rear seat usage.

So does anyone know if they make something like this for TJ's that works with the seat up ???
I realize the rear seat can still be folded down to access , but it's an obstacle at least.
I have seat covers on also, so unless they know Jeeps, they won't see the pull lever.

I'm aware some may have created their own designs, feel free to post those also.

I could not find anything commercially made that met my needs, so I made my own interior cargo rack.

Everything in this photo except the tent, black backpack and first aid kit fits behind the rear seat, on the cargo shelf, or on the well wells.

There's a factory add-a-trunk or whatever they called it as well, but it's probably an inch thick and by the time you get it mounted there's not much room to fit anything back there. Maybe a Rockford Fosgate punch 10.

I don't need a back seat so I just added an aluminum frame to the top of my lockbox. to keep stuff from rolling around.

My rear seat remains fully functional. The interior rack can be removed in less than 5 minutes if necessary.

But the OP said that folding the back seat down “is not exactly practical for rear seat usage”. So it sounds like he wants the rear seat up when the rack is in place… which isn’t really possible?? No can sit there

For a TJ with rear seat, anything behind would be a short shelf rather than a cargo rack.

For my LJ, I relocated my rear seat rails forward to match the rear legroom of a TJ, which gave me enough room behind the seat for a decent size interior cargo rack without compromising the functionality of the rear seat.

I have a rear InstaTrunk that encloses the area behind the rear seat. Some stuff like kayak paddles live on top of it in the summer. I’ve thought about modifying an aluminum cargo rack to attach to the roll bar, but it never seems like it would be that beneficial for me.

Yes, the OP has a tj. Therefore, a cargo rack like the one he pictured is impossible to put in without having the rear seat folded down. Either we don’t understand what he’s asking, or he’s a bit confused…

OP is looking for a fresh perspective on how to solve a dilemma that has plagued every jeeper since 1941 - how to get 10 pounds of shit into a 5 pound sack, or more diplomatically, "How do I get my family and gear to fit in my jeep?"

My experience with that dilemma began with a CJ-3B, then a CJ-5, followed by a CJ-7. More space was one of the reasons I wanted an LJ.

The interior dimensions of a CJ-7 are not substantially different than a TJ. In mine, I had a Bestop storage box behind the rear seat, Bestop side boxes, brackets welded to the roll cage for a Conferr rack sized for the mini trucks of the era, and a swing-away on the rear with 3 jerry cans and an offset spare.

In this shot from the Rubicon Trail, the rear seat is partially occupied by a gear bag as there were
no rear seat passengers. Tent, sleeping bags and light stuff were in the Conferr rack.

Of course, sometimes it is impossible to fit family and gear in a short wheelbase jeep. My father bought this '47 Bantam trailer in 1965 to take our family of five the length of the Baja Peninsula in a CJ-5 the following year, a time when pavement ended just south of Ensenada on the Pacific and at San Felipe on the Mar de Cortez.





Its current incarnation was inspired by this trailer, that I remember seeing for the first time in the mid-1960's somewhere in the Anza Borrego desert:




There are lots of ways for a jeeper to carry passengers and gear. The more one has the more one has to think outside the box.

It is an ordinary Reliance portable toilet from Walmart. Cheap and easy to replace if and when necessary. The bag is 16x16x4", made for me by Blue Ridge Overland Gear several years ago when they were still small enough to do custom orders. Most of the bags shown came from them.

As long as it just covers the open area of the cargo hold, then no. Seat will be completely usable
