3k was ridiculous, you could have bought a new axle and had it installed for less than that. Maybe not a rock jock but at least an OEM quality 30...I just put in a used 30 in the front of my TJ for $150...but I also did my own work, if I was paying someone else, it is a 3-5 hour job to swap it, at $100 per hour, you are less than $1k
