not everybody has to have a different vehicle every 6 months, some of us fix em and drive the shit out of them.Sigh...As my father used to say: "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him suck your dick..."

I’m just trying to get input from those who know more about this than I do. I would prefer one with a good title and in pretty good shape, but TJ’s like that are running about $20k around here. So something for a fraction of that got my interest peaked about one with a salvage title.Sigh...As my father used to say: "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him suck your dick..."

Must be a California thing. I have full coverage on my Jeep with a stated value policy at $28k. I have a prior salvage title from a tree falling on the roof. Runs me about $80 a month.Be aware you will only be able to obtain liability insurance for a vehicle with a salvage title which is what my TJ has.
Theft, and potential major off road damage. Hard to replace an LJ Rubicon for under $20k, let alone one that has a lot of mods. I rarely even drive it on road. Just cheap piece of mind. Why would you pay for full coverage for such a cheap vehicle? Insurance won’t pay more than their version of BB, ignore the upgrades and most likely any damage done off road.
I have an 89 YJ with a salvage title and have never had an issue with it because of it. I pay $350 a year as a recreational vehicle. I bought it from the junkyard back in 91. Junkman was using it as his dingy and decided to switch to a Cherokee. While some won’t buy a salvage many do. Some guy will see it cum in his pants and hand over the cash.
Not all insurance companies are like what you just described. My very well built 97 TJ was stolen 11 years ago. I sent AAA a 3 page spread sheet and photos documenting everything I had done to it which was a LOT. Due to the spreadsheet and photos I provided, AAA hired an independent adjuster to go over everything. Not long afterward I received a check for more than double what they could have gotten away with according to the policy. They had no clue of all of my upgrades until they received my information so none of the upgrades were technically covered. It was a substantial check for a TJ with just over 200k miles. Why would you pay for full coverage for such a cheap vehicle? Insurance won’t pay more than their version of BB, ignore the upgrades and most likely any damage done off road.

They insure everything from ATV to Super and Collector Cars. They rate it and charge by miles and risk. I have a mileage limit but its pretty much a trail Jeep so that's never an issue, I believe its 5 or 10k miles per year . I told them how much coverage I wanted (few thousand more than I paid for the Jeep) and they gave me a rate. Its about double what I would pay for liability, but for me its worth it.I think it's the same way in CO, liability only.
Isn't Hagerty more for "toys" like UTVs than normal highway vehicles? Maybe they don't care as much and insure it as a crawler or something
Okay interesting. Sounds unconventional, didn't know that was how they're coverage was offered but had heard about them beforeThey insure everything from ATV to Super and Collector Cars. Two points that *I* was trying to make here; to wit:Who cares if resale on a salvage title is low? You paid a low price to start with!
You can always make an offer. To buy the salvage titles jeep, replace the ignition switch and put a new top on it I would be up to 8k. I saw a TJ on Craigslist that’s a base sport, like the salvaged one, that needs new seat covers and a rear seat. It’s listed for $9,800. That makes the the salvage titles one over priced and not worth the effort.
I did see one Craigslist for $25k that has my interest. It’s a 2003 tomb raider edition rubicon with 66k original miles. It’s #138 of 1000 made. This looks interesting and may be worth the extra price. I’m not in a hurry to buy, I just thought it might be a cheaper way to get one until I started adding up cost to bring it up to acceptable standard.
