To keep the TJ?

Thinking of selling the TJ...wife doesnt like driving it but likes the JK of course. So thats one issue

I have the base model 2005 4.0l auto so wondering if worth the effort to upgrade to lockers in front at least...vs getting a rubicon...I wont do serious offroad...just thinking about maintenance and breaking stuff on this 2005 with 140k miles with dana 30.

Also need to get ac fixed on TJ so not sure how much that will cost yet.

so just curious if base TJ worth keeping or getting a jk ruby...or a sport JK and upgrade to lockers

I'd want the beefer axles over lockers. Having the lockers thrown in with a Rubicon is just added meat. I guess I'm saying that I'd go Rubicon over Sport and Add Lockers. I'd only do Sport if I was going to upgrade the axles to something more than what you would get with a Rubicon, like Dana 60 or something.

But, I'm not even close to being an expert. Let's get them to chime in.

If no serious offroad why spend the money on lockers? Yes they are nice to have but ask people how much they actually use them. If it were mine I would have a good LS in the rear and a lunchbox locker in the front.

As far as the Dana 30, it's a solid axle up to 35" tires and will hold up well.

Rubicon of your doing a jk the danna 30 isnt the weak spot in the tj the 35 is if thats what you have

I want to do enough to get stuck..not rock climbing type thing... but I expect to end up with wheels not touching the ground also one front/ one back
I want the jeep as dual purpose so the wife will not like the lunchbox and neither would I.
But Id also hate to spend 30k+ on a jk ruby that is a 3rd vehicle.

so just really indecisive, which makes it worse

I wheel at least once a week and have had my Rubicon for 6 months.....I've used the lockers 1 time.
I will admit though, there is a level of comfort just knowing they're there.

Lockers, gears, new axles, and someone to do it all, plus fix the ac, will be cheaper than a new vehicle, that's a guarantee.

I buy a new vehicle when the repair cost outweigh a payment. Of course, I never take a payment, I buy outright, but I use it as a gauge.

I have an X and if I could do it again I'd probably hold out for a Rubi. But mine was too clean to pass up, '05, 6-speed 46,000 mi, 12k last December

Yours and mine are about the same. 2002 sport with 42,000 miles. Brought may of 2016. Truthfully though, I don't need a rubicon. I won't wheel it that hard. I'll never go more than 31" tires. Plus I just like to explore country and forest service roads. Nothing too daring or extreme.
