Trailer hitch receiver?

A class 3 will get you a much higher tow rating than the jeep is rated for, however it will also give you a 500lbs max tonge weight. That will help you in the case of a basket (depending on how much you plan to load on it) as the further out from the hitch that weight is the more it multiples in the actual tonge weight. Also don't forget the forces of all that weight, on a leaver, going over bumps if you are on bad roads. The only thing that ever goes wrong with too much trailer hitch is your pocket book. Incidentally I'm also a fan of the hitch being built in to the bumper for departure angle reasons.

So what is a departure angle? I was kinda thinking the same thing in terms of buying a better hitch than my Jeep could carry.. couldn’t hurt much more than my wallet haha

Departure angle is its counterpart at the rear of the vehicle – the maximum ramp angle from which the car can descend without damage."

I have a Curt tow hitch. It works fine for towing. It’s for sale now on our local CList for $50. I needed more rear bumper clearance for my rock crawling, so got an integrated bumper/hitch receiver.

It should sell on CL, JMT - I'm not sure when I would get back down your way

Yep basically if you do a steep climb hills you can end up standing on the hitch pulling the rear wheels off the ground. That and getting hung up in rocks. If it's part of the bumper that brings it up much higher.

Keep in mind, TJs are only rated to tow 2000 pounds.

And Californis requires trailer brakes on anything over 1500 pounds.

I never had these types of issues. What would happen though, for better or worse, is it would hit on a drop. For better it protected the bumper, for worse it ruined my departure angle.
