Hey guys, 99 tj 4.0 5 speed im traveling and dont have time to scroll through all the threads. I was driving today and i had a horrid snap. Got out, checked everything, thought maybe it was the front drive shaft. I limped it into a small town, it cracked several more times with violent shudders. ended up losing drive function except in 4 low. Didnt feel or hear that crack in low. Is this a transfer case sitcheation? Thank you all!!

When you state you were driving and heard a horrid snap; was this off road or on the asphalt ?
With the tires chocked you need to climb under the Jeep and inspect the front and rear driveshafts, the transfercase driveshaft output yokes, the crossmember (bolts) and some pictures for forum members to look at.

So it drives in 4low, but nothing in 4hi or 2hi? Just it just tev but not move? Or does it move with this noise? Need a better description.

Well when i bought it, it wouldnt stay in 4hi, was told it was linkage. Now, as of yesterday, it only drives in 4low. If i try to drive in 2wd it makes grinding noises, and wont engage, wont move.

Maybe it's still the linkage.

Disconnect the link to the arm on the side of the transfer case. Shift it into 2WD with pliers on the TC shift arm, rocking the driveshaft a little to get it to go in. If it goes firmly into 2WD, and drives ok, you can leave the linkage disconnected forever, or until you get a chance to fix it.

I am not especially mechanically inclined, never done anything like that. May just swap it since its the original. Thanks man

Asphalt. The ujoints/driveshaft need replacing, little loose but a mechanic inspected that yesterday and said none of that was blown out.

Thanks man. I think i may just swap it since its the original anyway...?

Check the linkage first. Plenty of youtube videos out there to help you. If the linkage is out of adjustment, you will have the same issues with another transfer case.

If you aren't comfortable with looking at the linkage, I am sure a shop will only charge you a few hundred dollars for the 15 minute diag.

Ok. I thought the linkage was internal to the transfer case. Only $250 labor to swap it, way less than i would have expected. Ill watch some videos and do some exploring. Thank you sir

The linkage is on the outside connected to the shifter.

You can crawl under, disconnect the linkage to the shifter, then move the lever on the tcase to 2H, etc.

I didn't think about the linkage effectively shifting it "between" different outputs. Definitely worth checking that first. It's super easy and free.
