Hi. My roommate got her tractor stuck in the mud trying to mow next to a creek. I drove my TJ down a hill and through the woods and pulled her out with my winch. When I went to leave, I didn't wanna tear up the grass on the uphill return so I went to put it in 4HI. I pulled the tcase lever all the way back and the 4WD light did not come on and when I tried to give it some gas, it sounded... clunky. Kinda like grinding gears, but not that rough. I put it over into 4LO and it worked fine.

I was bitching the next day to my friend and I shown him the problem. I noticed then during my demo that if I pull it all the way back, I have that problem. But if I push it slowly back toward 2WD, it will go into 4HI. He said I should get an upgraded tcase linkage. Would that fix it so it will go into 4HI when I pull it all the way back, or is that unrelated? I mean, it's not a big deal so long as I now know I can just push it slightly forward to get into 4HI but if there is a fix I'd do it cuz I hate little stupid things like that heh.

To answer your question, Yes upgrading the lever will fix it. However you may be able to get away with just adjusting the connection.

Solution: http://shop.savvyoffroad.com/Shifters_c13.htm

You can upgrade or add a drop bracket to the linkage so it will engage properly, but a cable shifter is the preferred solution to this problem.

Here is a video that goes through why you would want a cable oriented shifter & the installation:

Sounds like it needs to be adjusted. Lube up the pivot points while you are under there. I adjusted and lubed mine during my clutch swap and it shifts great now. Of course nothing wrong with swapping in the Savvy cable shifter either.

Been thinking about the Novak shifter - however, if all you did was lubricate it up and it works fine now, then no need to spend my $$$.

What lubricant did you use and how did you reach all the way up there to the shifter?

Well, mine was just hanging disconnected so it was easy to get to all the points. I used some spray silicone lube. Didn't want to use grease since that can attract dirt.

My apologies, could you explain further? Was your transfer case dropped or something?

And roger that. Thanks!

Thanks guys. That Novak cable shift sounds pretty nice, I think I'll just grab that. At $170, it's not particularly expensive and the smooth shift operation sounds like a nice perk.

You'll be happy you did. Really, our TJs should have come with it. It's well worth it.
