Trunk Rack

What has everyone used for a rack in the trunk area? I know alot of people take the back seat out and store camping gear back there. I haven't seen very many options. Best one has a option $150 tray + $150 for mounting brackets. Hooke or so has one for $200. Curious what other options people have done or brands they have used.

I remove the back seat and do Tetris packing. I was able to pack supplies for two people: ice chest, camping gear (tent, sleeping bags, sleeping mats), duffle bags of clothing, and hunting gear (guns, waders, and a dozen duck decoys) in the back and it wasn’t up to the top of the seat backs, so coulda loaded even more gear.

I plan to do something like this.

Since I have an LJ… I want to do it in sections. Shouldn’t be too hard. One section goes in for when the rear seat is in place. It’ll be around 22” front-to-back. I’ll make a separate 33” or so platform that’ll mount in front of that one for when the seat is out.

That’ll give me a near-5’ flat platform behind the front seats. Under that I can put totes, gear, and I have some ideas about mounting a few things directly to the underside of the platform, between the framing.

On top will be some speaker enclosure carpeting (after applying some cheap sealer to the plywood) and some tie-downs… probably L-track.

I haven’t laid out all out yet, but I’m thinking I’ll use pins like these in the framing to secure the platforms so they can’t be pulled up from the top.

And being that it's a Hooke Road product, you probably saved enough to replace those tail lights!

Ain't been pulled over yet... getting a few more miles out of those $20 Amazon trailer lights before I replace (and probably instantly break) them.

I feel like every time he posts a new photo, there's a little less tail light than the last time...like something's slowly eating them....

From what I’ve read, many of us would never pass the initial inspection and would be banned from the roadways.

The wife and I like to go and spend time out in the back country. Sometimes for 10 days or so. Here's what I rigged up for Blue.



It's a cheap basket platform for a quad. Works great. Holds two Nato cans for gas and water. Axe, first aid kit, and fire extinguisher mount on the outside rails. The gun rack holds two rifles. The Stihl chain saw and supplies fits in front of the Nato cans and under the gun rack. Two day pack fit between the chainsaw and the front seats. The dry box hold bedding and bulky clothes. A cook box fits under the rack. A tent, sleeping bags, tarp, rope, tools, and rigging fit under the rack as well. There's room for two SxS shotguns in cases in there as well, if we decide to take them. Sometimes, I'll throw in my small reloading kit if we are going to do much shooting.

It all fits under the top, as well.
