Trying to decide between 33" and 35" BFG K03s

Your axles are not going to hold up to 35’ tires…

😉

I was trying to order some but 14' was the best I could find.

Quick update on this...

I went on a group ride (at least 20 other vehicles) and got to test out the new tires on some icy trails. They did great and I'm super happy with the size, handling, and traction on road and on trail. I had no issues on sections where some other folks slid into ditches or had to to back down and re-attempt icy sections. Of course, a lot of that can be choosing the right lines, speed, etc. (and some random luck). In any case, it was a great first impression of this wheel/tire set. I did a little "brake testing" on the ice and snow going down slopes and these are very grippy tires. I know a lot will depend on specific tire sizing, weight of vehicle, wheel base, etc. - but for my '97 TJ, this wheel/tire/geometry has exceeded my expectations. Based on what I had been reading and my experience with my other wheel/tire set in similar conditions (and a lot of experience with other vehicles in icy conditions), I wasn't expecting such a night and day difference.

Changes in tire PSI due to temperature, elevation, weather changes have been annoying too. So I'll just say I aired down a little for this ride, but could have gone much lower. I suspect I wouldn't have noticed much difference for this particular ride.

I also weighed this wheel/tire combo (285/75R16 KO3s on 16" Moabs) at 88.2 pounds, versus 110 pound for my alternate wheel/tire combo (35X12.50 on 17" WERs). I didn't change the spare on this KO3/Moab set yet. I'm being cheap and waiting to get a used 285/75R16 spare tire for my 5th Moab wheel, figuring the 35" spare (from my WER wheel set) could be used "carefully" if I need a spare sooner than later in an emergency. However assuming all 5 get swapped and are close in weight, the difference per tire is approximately 110 - 88.2 = 21.8 pounds, or 21.8 * 5 = 109 pounds in overall reduced weight of the vehicle. 109 pounds isn't a huge difference, but my understanding is that the additional 21.8 pounds in rotational mass per tire could be noticeable - time will tell!

Did you need wheel spacers to keep them from rubbing?

I had 1.25" spacers already, which I left on. I'm guessing they would still be fine without the spacers since it looked like I had plenty of room with the steering maxed out. But I don't know for sure.

Personal suggestion but if your planning to run the 33’s installing some factory fender flares will provide a more proportional look if that is what your after. It is subjective but it sounds like you asking if the 33’s look too small and you’ve indicated you prefer the performance of the 33’s over the 35’s. Just a thought and a fairly small investment for a used set off the interweb to help you decide what look you prefer.
