Upper end of SE performance off road?

on a SE??? nothing lol. You can get away with a lunchbox locker in the Dana 30 if you dont see winter (as I am told from wiser forum members). But the stock rear Dana 35 cannot handle a locker and be reliable on rough terrain. If you do go that route, bring extra shafts. Maybe an upgraded chromoly shaft will help but still..

Interesting. I'm going with a detroit in the back and a lunchbox up front with upgraded shafts at both ends. 4.88 gears and 31" tires. Rumor has it that should work pretty well with the four angry squirrels. I guess we'll see.

It's still in the financing stage. Probably get done next fall before hunting season. At the moment, the plan is to raise the cash over the summer, get the parts rounded up, and do the deal in a buddie's shop. He has all the tools I don't, and has done a few. We'll see if I chicken out on the DIY when the parts are on the bench. Probably not though. I've done some pretty exotic machinery in my time. Like main reduction gears for 30,000 shp steam engines.

You could always put more reduction in your transfer case for that deep sand and mud. For the Dana 35 go with a super Dana 35 kit.
That's essentially where I'm headed. My calculations and information from experienced users tells me that the 4.88's will take care of the gear ratio requirements in low range. I don't really do deep sand or deep mud.
