What does your frame look like right now?

Funny. I flushed the rear part of my frame out just tonight in preparation of application of Eastwood frame coating. For the moment I'm just doing the rear part as I'm in there installing my Poison Spider rear bumper tie ins. Here is one shot I have of the t case skid. Post more later.

Not a whole lot but I could definitely see it on the driveway. My 2005 has lived in FL its whole life and I'm pretty sure no one had it off road until I bought it last summer. Had it stuck up to the tub a few weeks ago. I am also pretty sure it was on the beach with PO's as there are places you can drive on the beach around here so there has been some salt exposure. I'm trying to do everything to preserve it and would like to give it to my son in 20 or so years.

Those photos don't exactly match locations for all photos but conditions were similar side to side before. I did a lot of sanding and grinding, lots of phosphoric acid, Eastwood Premium Rust Encapsulator, Rust-oleum primer and enamel paint.

The worst area was on the lower part of the frame rail that contacts the transmission skid plate. Interior is actually pretty clean but I have pulled some rust chunks out of there.

I purchased the Jeep here in South Carolina but the original owner made a lot of runs to New Jersey.

Get under your vehicle and look closely at that crossmember that attaches the rear shocks and the front part of the gas tank.
 
Looks great BlackSheep- I'd love to eventually complete a full project like this...Like Mike said above, I'm trying to preserve and keep mine for many many years to come

Haha thanks buddy - can't tell if I'm in the minority or majority here yet as far as conditions go. I'm focusing on the positives instead of the negatives :) I've learned a ton, the whole driver's side is pretty much entirely clean, the t-skid can in fact be removed, and I haven't been able to punch any holes directly through on the passenger side. I think top part of the frame is in good shape with plenty of good metal left to weld caps if it really comes to that.

Once I win the lottery, I'll be ready for the frame swap.
You’ll be good to go. Remove the TCase Skid and correct that area as best you can with primer and Eastwoods. Try to do an internal frame clean out. There are threads on here about how to do that. Then prime and paint that as well. I think the original frame color is Semi-Flat Black.
 
This subject always blows me away, for those of us that live in areas that see lots of snow and the salt that follows. I can't believe that Manuf. haven't built a single car/truck with a stainless steel frame.

article says that this is "a potential technological breakthrough." REALLY? I thought of this shit when I was F'n 17 years old drivin around in my first rusty ass car! That was 30 stinkin years ago, "technological breakthrough" my ass!!!

Stainless isn't as great as you might think...There are some inherent issues trying to form 300 series Stainless (The stuff you would want to prevent real corrosion). Basically, it would have to be fully cut, assembled and welded vs bent like most Automotive frames. That would drive the price into the unrealistic category very quickly.

With today's technology they could even make it out of aluminum. Of course it would have to be considerably more beefy to maintain the strength of mild steel. Put it this way, if you can build a 747 out of aluminum, I'm pretty sure you can make an automobile frame.

I've had to change literally dozens of brake lines in my life time. Whenever I do, I always pickup stainless lines. problem is, I shouldn't have to! They should already be stainless considering the safety issue involved. Still "blows me away."

All you need is half a brain, the technology, and the means to pull it off.

Do you REALLY think its just that easy? If it were, don't you think they would already have done it? You're correct, they CAN build corrosion proof frame. Aluminum, Stainless, Carbon Fiber, etc. Are you gonna pay for it though? Probably not. How much is a 747? Multiples of millions of dollars. Cost isn't the leading factor in Airplanes. Cost is MUCH higher in priority when it comes to automobiles.

FWIW, I have a moderately rusty frame...but my brake lines are all perfect. Whatever coating Jeep used in 2004 works REALLY well. They are not stainless either.
 
If you notice, miltary trucks last "forever"... they use 10% more zink in the metallurgy process and coat with CARC paint (chemical adhesive resistive coating) pick up is a 1985 and duece is a 1971. Both new england trucks, nearly no rust.
