What mods should i do to my 2001 tj

You do need to be careful with a cracked exhaust. When an engine is turned off outside air is pulled through the tailpipe all the way into the engine, but because the complete tailpipe section is hot the air is heated and by the time it reaches the engine they are both about the same temperature. When air can get in closer to the engine it may not have time to heat properly and this can cause a HUGE problem if it's very cold outside. Cold air on hot valves can and will cause valve warpage. Just asked the "old timers" that used to run their hot rods with open headers.

You have a stock TJ so there is no need to re-gear unless you increase your tire size, which wasn't one of the things that you mentioned.

What are you *not* getting out of your TJ that is making you look for performance upgrades?
Im plan to do a lift and upgrade the tires eventually but for now i just want to make it run as best as it can now. Im replacing the oil pan and rear main seal (small drip leak) and then after that im not sure what else to replace

I have a completely stock wrangler tj and I'm in the process of replacing all the deteriorating gaskets and adding some mod to help it run and drive better. The first thing i wanted was a cold air intake, but researching i read that it was a waste of $$$. So I'm asking what mods are actully going to get me better profomance ie. Hp, mpg????

Honestly if you're looking for more horsepower and better mpg you bought the wrong vehicle. maybe a JK? It has more horsepower and better gas milage. My dads gets over 20. Agree with Chris. Cold air is waste of money. I had a K&N on my tj when I got it. Sold that crap for a stock airbox. Literally NO change when I went back to stock airbox. Super chip tuners don't work for ours either. (Is that what an ECU is?) you can tune the JK engine much more than the 4.0 but I dunno how much it truly helps.

I can say peronally I was really into trying to improve mpg on mine for like a week. Then I realized it was pointless. You will get better mpg if you go with a skinny small street tire. That's about all you can do that I know of. (I commute 60 miles to work and get maybe 16 going 60)

X2...nothing really. This has been asked a lot just search thread titles for gas mileage. I drive a stock LJ on 31 street rubber and get 18 which is better than most it seems. In one post Chris stated a jeep has "the aerodynamics of a barn on wheels" and that seems about right. Given this it can only be so good.

For the most part the guys are right. The factory 4.0 just isnt setup from the factory to make tons of power. The 4.0 was designed a long time ago when 190/220 were great numbers. And in stock trim TJ the 4.0 is awesome and feels great. But add big tires, bigger axles, bigger driveshafts, and heavier wheels then yes it starts to fall short.

IMO power to weight ratio is king. If you want make big numbers but still drive it down the interstate with ease you should definitely look at a power adder (boost) or stroker. If you want bigger numbers then a 5.3 or 6.0 LS should be on your horizon.

Also I'd like to add, highway driving don't go over 60, 65 tops. If I'm lucky and it's not super windy I get probably 18mpg going 60. At 65 16. 70-80mph I swear I get under 10 haha. That I'm sure is 95% percent the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

And don't put a turbo in these if you ever plan on taking them off-road. They will get red hot and you hit a puddle or river and they crack.

(Am I in the minority?? My jeep can do 80 fine. Only had to do it a few times running late for work but aside from horrible mpg it's fine. One thing I see when people are selling a Jeep is "can do 70 fine" or "shakes at 70" etc.)

If I can do more than 65pmh I'm amazed lol...at that speed It feels like I'm doing 100. (but I am running half door and a rag top)
