STICKY What should I look for when buying a used Wrangler TJ?

That's a good looking Rubi. You do want to check that the lockers are working. Also, climb underneath and check for things like mud in the frame. If you can pull the plugs on the diffs and check for any water or oil fluid. Looks like it once had a winch. Check to see that the wiring hasn't been jacked up.
I'm assuming that to check the lockers I'll just hit the switch and if the lights on the dash come up they're working?

That will tell you that the pump has hit pressure, has stopped and you are getting signal back from the locker. You still would want to test them on a gravel parking lot to insure that they are working. It is hard to find replacement factory lockers and they cost $$$$ when you do.

If there's one around then I'll be sure to try it. Thanks JP

It shouldn't be hard to find somewhere to try it out. If not you can do it in a paved parking lot just be ready for it to grab when you turn. Put it into 4lo flip the switch and drive slowly forward turning side to side. It's a great looking Jeep. I hope you get the deal done.

Thanks JP. I'll let y'all know if I get it.

New to the whole Jeep thing and have been looking for a while, but have been around trucks my entire life. Looking at this 98 Sport and planning on the typical review of items. Interested in other thoughts or comments. They're asking $7000 for it with 113,000 miles, manual trans.

It looks clean, but we need to see the underside to know what we are really dealing with. Also check to see if it has a Dana 44 rear axle.

Thanks. The owner claims that it is all in good shape, but I’ll be inspecting it in the morning.

Look for rust on the underside. That’s going to be the biggest thing to look for with any Wrangler.

Post some photos when you're looking at it. I'm always online and will usually respond very fast, so feel free to post them up on this thread if you'd like!

@JoeG That shifter being off like that should be at least $50 off the price. Looks clean. Thorough inspection with screwdriver on the frame. Look for cracks on the frame around the steering box. If you can take someone with you, do a "Dry Steer Test."

Not that it is a deal breaker, but, check and make sure the top is good and the zipppers work on all the windows. Winter is coming to most parts of the country.

Also, in the front shot, it looks like you have some uneven wear on the driverside tire. Looks like rough country stabilizer. Hard to tell from that pic. If it has a RC suspenion system, plan on shocks for sure.

I am passing on this one. It does have a Rough Country suspension and the front tires are half bald. Definitely has a toe issue. Also, a loose exhaust bracket. Owner stated that it is fine to leave the frame the way it is and that it would only cost about $300 to repair, I think that is probably inaccurate.

$300 to fix that frame? More like $3000 plus! Good call on walking away from that thing. The underside looks mummified.
