What's "off road"?

OFF-ROAD

First used in 1954

designed, built, or used for traveling off public roads, especially on unpaved roads, trails, beaches, or rough terrain: an off-road vehicle. 2. taking place on such roads or terrain: off-road racing.

That settles it, right? I mean, that’s what the dictionary says...:D

It's not true until you've read it on the internet, or in National Enquirer, silly man... ;)

Off road is when you have to get out and turn in your hubs or your not going any farther. You folks do remember locking hubs, right? :)
Ha! Funny story about this. One of my younger friends bought a cj5, and wondered why he couldn't climb hills...I watched him, and noticed that his front wheels weren't spinning. He said he probably had a problem with the t-case. I asked if he had locked the front hubs....he had not!

I had to teach the same guy about the foot switch for bright lights...

Ha ha. Even where I work we are to reliant on just pushing a button or moving a lever. Our service trucks are Fords with locking hubs and some people like to play games between shifts. A few times I've been caught in the pranksters cross hairs. I work in the oil sands and when it gets hot out we have to watch where and for how long we park, cause we sink sometimes up to the diffs. Ya sometimes the ground is that soft, fine at night when it cool down but not when the sun is out.

I really miss the foot dimmer switch. I liked the locking hubs too. At least I still have locking hubs on my 1988 Samurai.

Well... there are a lot of good examples of "Off Road" listed here and I used to think along these lines when I thought about off road. However I'm starting to doubt my interpretation of the term because here where I live, after you've purchased your Silverado, JK or JKU and installed your essential off-road equipment like a 6" lift, 40 inch tires, lots and lots and lots of light bars, colored ring headlights, really really loud exhaust, Booming stereo, badlands winch, angry-eye hood, chrome custom grill, lots and lots of badass skull/dagger/lightning bolt/some heavy metal band stickers and your hanging nut-sack trailer hitch so you can go "Off-Road" driving around town and bimping slowly and carefully over the speed-bumps in the McDonalds parking lot. Oh well...something for everyone and we all want to get our kicks doing what we like. I'd just really like to have the cash that gets spent on geegaws and loudness so you look the part. I will admit though that we live at a disadvantage here in northern Indiana because although Mud is found here in abundance, beach, logging trails, rock crawling, desert trails etc are non-existent and our total altitude change from the lowest to the highest points in the state is a whooping 937 feet, all of which is gradual. I think I might order my own dangling scrotum trailer hitch and go join the crowd at McDonalds!!!:D
