Why I drive a Jeep Wrangler TJ

You know , we all get into fixing these things up and keeping them going on here, and forget to talk about why we own them in the first place .

Maybe I'm the only one , but I just love going anywhere in mine , anytime .

Why ? Because it's fun .

I love the fact that you have to really "drive " it . Getting in it , laying the phone down , watching the road , shifting , brings the pleasure back to driving, to having control .

The fact that it's a 4 wheel drive , convertible , rugged , universally liked vehicle just adds to all that .

And yes , it's fun to see it turn heads - admit it .


I grew up in CJ-5 's and 7's, and the TJ really retains the feel of those , in a much better package ...without being over refined .

Tim McGraw didn't sing "farmer Johnson's daughters just pulled up in a Civic" for a reason .

America loves cars , and my little TJ is my little part of the American automotive dream.

It's my break from the daily grind , my escape from normal (whatever that is )

It's a good time on wheels .

When I was about 10 we were at Myrtle Beach on vacation. One afternoon I walked out of our hotel room to go to the ocean. As I stood there, a young girl pulled up driving a Jeep. Neither her nor the Jeep had a top on. I think about that every time I get in my Jeep!

I've loved Jeeps ever since I was a little kid. My dad bought a black CJ7 when I was 7 or 8. It was so cool riding with the doors off and the little bikini top. About 6 months ago my dad found a 05 LJ with a 6 speed. (Wouldn't buy an auto) Nothing against autos but I think a jeep should be manual. Anyway he got me wanting my own so I picked a 97 TJ project. One day I hope to have it ready for a trip out west to Moab.

Man that's awesome. I can still remember the first Jeep CJ--5 Renegade I ever saw .. I couldn't believe anything could have been cooler . I was mesmerized . Guess I still am .

After I get my TJ done if love to find an old Cj2a. I've been watching videos of guys wheeling them on the Rubicon and that looks like so much fun. It's amazing how capable those lil Jeeps are in Stock form.

I probably first fell in love with Jeeps watching Roy Roger's sidekick Pat Brady in his Jeep Nellybell. The Rat Patrol cemented that love.
My first vehicle was a 1948 CJ-2A, bought in 1973. I spent enough money on that Jeep that I just about could have bought a new one. Never the less, I loved that old Jeep like a favorite dog. Fast forward through my 1975 CJ-5, 1979 CJ-7, and a 1987 YJ. Loved them all, lost them all in one way or another. The YJ was repoed in 1990.
2015, yes twenty-five years later, second wife and a daughter, I stumbled onto my latest Muddog. All of them were called that, all of them had the hood ornament.
The first weekend I drove it, top off just like I used to, it reminded what I felt like all those years ago. It still does, and it's still the most fun you can have on four wheels.

Sounds like we had a similar path. When I got out of the service, I bought a 1944 Jeep. Loved that Jeep....but was a little slow on the open road and had the small 9" brakes. So then in 1975 I upgraded to a 1974 CJ-5. Had that CJ-5 for 13 years. I needed a small pickup since I was doing a lot of Hog hunting with my dogs and needed room for a dog box. Years later was missing my Jeep. Found a 1988 YJ. Several years later, lost the YJ in a divorce. But all worked out well. Found a better wife and better Jeep! My present TJ!

Growing up I spent every summer at my uncles house he lived by lake lahontan and he had an old cj we’d always go to the lake and fish and swim. Every time I went to his house he had the top and doors off. Although I was scared as a little kid driving around with no door to hold me in I still liked the feeling of freedom that it gave and I’ve liked Jeeps ever since.

I feel like it’s a real commitment to own a Jeep. And if you can’t make that commmitment, you should probably let it go. If you can, it’s a momentary break from the daily grind. It’s also very American, very patriotic, very rugged, very freedom-oriented, and very sexy with the right person behind the wheel. I own a Jeep because it’s just me (see previous description).
