Winch line to drum attachment WRG

I like this method because the screw mount to side of drum is terrible at best. This way of doing it greatly increases the chances of the line not leaving the drum should one have a momentary lapse in judgement and spool out too far under load.
We use a Locked Brummel without the buried tail. That goes through the fairlead and key to helping it lock down and providing tension on the drum right away is to go OVER the top of the drum.

Bring it around the back of the drum and back out through the fairlead opening.

The loop is big enough to feed the thimble through.

Pull the line all the way through and cinch the loop down tight on the drum, lay the tail across the drum, cut to length if needed.

Use a couple strips of duct tape and tape down the tail.

Spool on the line as normal making sure it goes under the drum when you are spooling in. This way builds tension on the drum very quickly so you can spool it up under load right away.

I tie off to an anchor. Apply the parking brake lightly for drag if on level ground, pulling the rig uphill some, no parking brake. I usually have someone steering the rig keeping it pointed at the anchor and then I walk in front with remote and guide the line back and forth to keep the layers flat. Most fairlead openings are narrower than the drum. The layer will force the incoming line past the opening, hit the drum and start back.

You are trying to get the layers packed tight enough that the line under load while winching won't sink down into them and cause a problem.

Came across this thread while looking for recommendations on synthetic winch rope. A little different topic then spooling but anyone have good recommendations on mfr of rope? I’ve got a Warn with 3/8 cable. I contacted Warn to see if they had a replacement option, which they did at $500 just for the rope. Just about fell out of my chair, and thought “I could go get HF winch for that price almost”. We have three other Jeeps two with the HF winch and no issues. Anyways cost seem to vary $100 on Amazon to the $500 from Warn. Looking for some recommendations / thoughts.

I am looking at picking up a new winch line from your website. Do you recommend the version with a drum loop, or just do it like you showed above without the built in loop? I will be installing it on a Waren Zeon 10 that currently has a steel cable if it matters.

I believe what he showed above is the drum loop option. You can either get it that way from him, or do the Locked Brummel loop yourself.

Ahhh, Ok I see that now. I was thinking he just created a loop by wrapping the tail under and taping it to the drum. Drum loop version it is then! Thanks.

What diameter fid do you need to do the Brummel. I notice you have to pull the loop through rope at one point. So do you use a 3/4” fid for that? (3/8”+3/8”)?

I have the cheap plastic fids, I just use the larger of the 3 with a pusher. Probably 1/2".
