Would you still drive a TJ if...

I am on paved road 40% and unpaved or off 60%. But I will drive it anywhere including the interstate. If I’m not working it’s what I’m driving. It’s not a mall crawler and it’s not so dedicated that it has to be towed to go offroad.
I don’t need a car that thinks it’s smarter than me. Work rents me a car weekly and automatic braking is a PIA- misreads road conditions. I don’t like lane ‘assist’ either. My understanding is starting in 2027 vehicles will track your breath (alcohol) and your eyeballs. Vehicle will not start or will slow down and warn you to take a break if it assumes you’re tired. No thanks.

My daughter just bought a 2026 Kia Sorento. It has the lane keeping bullshit. She turned it off.

YUP. I live in the land of strip malls so I don't get to go off-roading. I used to ride motorcycles but the advent of texting has made that a suicide mission where I live, and it wasn't practical to suit up in a full face helmet, tech jacket and boots to run a quick errand (I know people ride in t-shirts and shorts but that was never going to be me). And no real way to carry anything.
The TJ gives me wind in my hair and sun on my face with my dog along for the ride, even if that ride is just a mini Costco run.

yeah this island is no place for a motorcycle, traffic getting worse and worse. Hell my minivan got totaled in the lowes parking lot in November by a guy that looked right and not left before he t-boned me.

I had to pick up my Wife at LAX yesterday evening. It’s a 70 mile drive for me. Traffic wasn’t heavy but I can’t believe the ASSHOLES who drive the speed limit in the fast lane while the traffic to their right zips by them. This is LA if you aren’t doing a least 80 stay out of the fast lane or the carpool lane. Hour and a half to get there solo with fast track and an hour and 15 min back thank’s to fast track and carpool lanes. If it was a weekday the trip would be at least 2 hours. Glad I don’t live in LA.

Cali has been a shithole since after Arnold was the Goverernator.

Its gotten far worse since I escaped back in '17 - I saw what was coming with NewScum. As for people I miss, mainly my dance sisters and some of my co-workers. Had some good neighbors too.

Which reminds me of one co-worker - who I do NOT miss: He came into my lab not long before my last day and made a comment about there being "another Deomcratic vote in Florida...". My Response: "Excuse me? EXCUSE ME?!? I'm NOT going to Californicate the state of Florida!" Guy couldn't get out of there fast enough, and I think that was the last time I saw him.

I guess it is still relevant though. My TJ sees 99% pavement, and there is no legal wheeling where I live. I do take it on some rural dirt roads, and to some other states with unmaintained roads through national parks. It is really fun for that, and also for taking to the beach. The open air feeling and driving experience is worth it to me, especially for nostalgia alone. I've always wanted a TJ since I was a kid and they were new.

Mine is getting more and more trail rig like at this point but US roads are more trail like than they used to be (in bigger locales especially, like the Bay Area for example). The Jeep is more comfortable on bad roads than my sporty car.

Mine’s a DD, and I wanted it for off-road too, but I haven’t done too much of that. Haven’t met any off-roaders around me yet.

Before the TJ my DD was a ‘86 Blazer. Nothing but pickups before that. Haven’t owned a car since the ‘80’s, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon!

Especially with the current state of cars. I’ll keep my old stuff. At least I can work on them without needing a computer interface.

And even though the TJ drives me crazy with its issues, it’s fun to drive, goes anywhere, fits everywhere, and outside of my motorcycle, one of the “funnest” rides I’ve had!

HELL YES! My wife and I were talking about this the other day.

We both like the open air, no top / no doors aspect. But, we also like the fact that it's a bigger (and taller vehicle) than a convertible (which would be the only other way you'd get that full air effect).

So yeah, even without being able to off-road it, I would still own a Wrangler.

Let's also not forget about it's simplicity!
