I treat the entire cooling system as a maintenance item and replace when in the slightest doubt. As my TJ is still new to me but a decade and a half old, I replaced all of it assuming it was mostly original. It had a brand new radiator, I did the belt, belt tensioner, idler pulley, hoses, clamps, clutch, T-stat, rad cap, water pump and sending unit. I like the task and the piece of mind is comforting. The expense is small compared to having an unnoticed failure. Too hot here to take a chance. In the grans scheme of things, it is probably one of the least costly projects in these 4 wheel money pits. One thing I found, the T-stat had been removed at some point in the past. Not a grand idea.
