What gear ratio should I install in my Jeep Wrangler TJ / LJ? (and other re-gearing FAQs)

I know this post is a few years old but to suggest those gear recommendations to me is way overkill. With 35’s I’d run 456 or 488 at most. Remember a lot of people including myself use our Jeeps as daily drivers.
A lot of guys here use their rigs as daily drivers with 5.13 or lower with 35’s, even on the 6 speed.

I’m sure a lot of guys do many things, but wouldn’t your RPM stay above 3k with 488 or 513? Also, you can take off in 2nd gear from a stop!!! I mean we have a transfer case for 4wheeling so why the overkill for daily driving? Just a thought. After all we are men not sheep that just follow. Sometimes it’s healthy to ask why?

not saying make decisions without thinking or asking why, just saying it’s not as crazy as you think, evidenced by many owners who have done exactly what you are thinking is crazy.

Yes, it will rev pretty high. But the 3 speed auto did the same from the factory and it’s fine. It doesn’t kill mpg near as much as you’d think, if at all. Yes, you can start 2nd gear but that’s just the nature of the low 6 speed 1st gear.

Look at what the 3 speed auto does in stock form. It's crazy.

Thank you Macho, you just confirmed everything I stated. I’ll stay with 4.56 or at most 4.88 for my daily drivin TJ with 35’s and Manuel tranny.

Have you ever driven a TJ Unlimited Rubicon with the 42RLE on 35's with the factory 4:10's in it?

Before I had my LJ built up I drove it for nearly ten years with the OEM 30.5" tire/4.10 gear ratio and spent just about every minute of highway/freeway/interstate time at or above 3,000 rpm.

I've never understood this sentiment. The NSG370 has a 4.46 to 1 first not a 6.XX to 1 first.

I believe most would agree but there comes a point where one has to admit that members with hundreds of years and hundreds of thousands of miles of combined experience might know a thing or two.

Yeah they suck balls. That’s why I never bought one
Which part sucked balls? I ask because it really sounds like you dismissed the question due to the auto and didn't actually answer whether or not you have driven one on 35's with the stock 4:10 gearing.

Is that how we got stuck with uncle Joe? Years of experience and doing the same thing? Lol
