I have a 97 Tj 5 speed 3.73 gears running 33's. I've ordered a Yukon 4.56 regear kit from quadratec and 30 spline revolution gear 1541H Axles. Still haven't decided on E-locker or Ox locker. I understand I'll need to order a new carrier bearing for the rear locker. I'm not locking or upgrading front axle shafts right now. I'll just eat the labor in the future. My main question is can I regear the front from 3.73 to 4.56 with out a new carrier. I'll do 4340 shafts and a locker in the front later, if I done have to now b/c new gears require new carrier. Anything else I'm missing please inform me!

Dana 30 is 3.07-3.55 and 3.73-5.13, so you will be fine with the 3.73 carrier for 4.56.
Any idea about carrier bearing. I think RevGear recommends a different carrier bearing and of course they are out of stock. Just want to have all the parts before I take it all to my mechanic, he tears in to it and goes wtf...

Yes, you will need the LM102949 bearings and the LM102911 shims I'm pretty certain. they are the same OD as stock but a larger ID for the larger carrier journals.

What I am NOT sure about are the carrier shims needed to make that all work. Might need to call Eaton or Revolution, I never found any good info on that and I went a different route.

You will definitely need the special bearings and their corresponding races. Eaton makes all of the Dana 30/Dana 35 carrier bearing journals larger than stock. I believe the bearings you need come out of a Chevy 7.5/8.5 rear axles. Maybe you can use their shims too.

too many guys promoting S35 kits to not know! I hope someone chimes in!

thank you!
No problem at all. That Yukon kit must be new, I've never seen it before.

There was once a guy around here named AOR (allens offroad) who has since closed shop, but he used to sell a bunch of gears and lockers esp on this forum. He had a big Elocker bundle which was a 30 spline kit front and rear with your choice of gears for about $2400. It came with all the crazy bearings and shims needed. His Super Dana 35 shims looked identical to that Yukon kit I just linked.

If you ever want to go elocker up front too, you will for sure need 1-2 sets of Yukon SK30214 shims for that one. Just so you're aware. And that one uses the same bearings I mentioned above.

the quadratec kit I've been eyeing had front and rear bearing and shims for both I think.

prob order this

I thought that new carriers came with the bearings you need. I don’t know about ox or elocker but arb lockers always come with new carrier bearings.

everywhere Im looking at purchasing lockers online doesn't show them in the product description. So IDK.

That's an ARB thing, they usually give you their special shims and bearings they require. The others don't. But you should know what you need now. The yukon stuff looks like the right part whether you buy it as the package or itemize it. You need the 2 bearings and races and then that special locking shim kit.

Might be good to buy an extra two bearings/races to use as setup bearings for whoever will be doing the work.

Thankyou. this info seems to get left out when asking about S35 kit!

The S35 is a solid kit, but a lot of the people who recommend it have not ran it, although quite a few have run alongside guys who have ran it and have seen what it can do, so they recommend it but they don't know the ins and outs of installing one. Definitely took some research for me to figure it out.

I believe @starkey480 has been sporting one for a while with a detroit. Pretty sure the Detroit requires the same funky bearings as the elocker and to go with them, the unique shims as well. Maybe he can shed more light. I know he's been impressed with the kit from what I've seen, wheeling hard AZ trails with no failures.

any take on this kit? also if only regearing front axle, I shouldn't need any bearings or shims correct?

I just looked. You can find the SK SSM35 shim kit on amazon for $16. I would buy that, the two bearings, and the two races there and call it done. You could even buy two shim kits just in case and still be cheaper than the $40 quadratec listed the shims for.

I wheel on my ranch here in Tx. Its mostly sandy country, don't really need a locker. But I plan on going to the San Juan Mountains in the jeep in the near future and I don't want to be w/o a locker. Also running 33s I know I need to upgrade axle shafts. that being said this jeep is a 97 with 37k miles. My uncle who has passed and my dad and now me have owned it. its shop kept, super clean. anyways I'm just saying I won't be bashing it so I'm 100% on the S35 kit and locker. I'll lock the front axle in the future but an unexpected 4th kid kinda curbed my spending lolol

I have no doubts you will be 100% perfectly fine on the S35. It's not cheap overall but it sure is convenient over getting a whole different axle (if you can even find one) and building that up to do a swap with.
