The little things:
I got my Jeep LJ on 10-20 -17 and thought I felt I did a good job looking it over. It only had 98726 miles and looks like it was very well maintained and not abused. I like to say slightly used. I did my job checked the major stuff like frame rails, floor pans and overall mechanical and found no issues that needed to be addressed.
Well it’s been a month now and with me putting just over 600 mile on it this is the time you find the little things. I am not talking about the sick to your stomach stuff that makes you feel like you just screwed yourself with this purchase, just the stuff you thought you checked but somehow missed.
So with every used rig that I have bought the battery has gone to poo in the first three months so in the first week I replaced it as three months from October’s purchase date is January and I live in a area with cold weather and snow so I was not going to take the chance and be stranded with a bad battery.
The second item was the fact the heater fan only worked on the last two settings. When I checked it out we were on a test ride and I thought low speed was working because we were moving and the cabin air flow made it feel like it was working. So I trouble shot and replaced the blower motor resister board. Man trying to get my fat hands behind the dash was fun so it taken me about 1.5 hours. I think I know the trick now if I have to do it again.
Third item: The jeep has a frame mounted trailer hitch and came with a stinger and ball. Thought this was odd as most dealerships remove them and give them to the employees or get rid of them for liability reasons. I did not look that close at the stinger just the hitch and how it was mounted and all was well, except the hitch pin was a lock type and I have no key and neither did they. So 30 seconds with my Sawzall and a new pin, problem fixed.
Last item I had noticed but did not really think about it was one of the rubber bumper on the jockey box door (glove box) was missing. Well going down my dirt road I notice it. Even empty it rattled pretty well.
So my brother and I went on a field trip to our local pull and save in Spokane Wa in search of a replacement. They have no wranglers on the lot but we thought we might get lucky and find some on other jeep types. That was a negative but many ford cars use the same one and we found that the 2007 PT curiser have slightly longer ones and put just a little more pressure on the jockey box door (glove box) to keep it from vibrating.
The one on the right is what was on my Jeep and the same as what is on the Fords. The left is the PT cruiser
While we were there I found for the jeep an ice scraper, tire gauge and 4 never use cigarette lighters and including the rubber bumper cost me 3 dollars including the 2 dollar entry fee. No I do not smoke but if I ever slide off the road in a snow storm or I am stranded in the hills with a broken jeep it is one more option that will start a fire to keep me worm at night until I get help.
my junk fines
So now that I feel I can trust the rig it is time to decide my next project with it.
