I'm planning on installing a trans temp gauge on my 42RLE.
I want to install the sending unit into the fluid output line (trans cooler inlet), but I don't know which line coming out of the transmission that is.
Can anyone tell me which line is which?

Put the sensor in the pan, it is what you want to know. The other readings are not useful. If you could read the transmission temp directly that would be best but you can't. The output line is just the torque converter fluid temp and the input line is just the temp out of the cooler and not the average the transmission is sucking up. You should really get a sensor in the pan if at all possible.

As recommended above install the temperature sensor into the pan, not the lines. The temperature of the ATF in the pan is far more important to the transmission than what it is in the lines, that's what the transmission is running on.
 
Here is something you may find interesting.
90% of the heat in an automatic transmission is generated by the churning of oil in the torque converter.
I am by no means an expert on automotive , but I am highly knowledgeable about the power shift transmissions found in Caterpillar equipment. These machines have the temp sensor in the converter outlet relief valve; the oil then reports to the oil cooler and back to the sump.
I don’t see an issue with using a temp sensor in the line going TO the oil cooler. In fact it is my opinion that this would be the ideal place to monitor temperature.
The further advantage would be the lack of a sensor in the pan that could get broken when wheeling.
I am aware that a TJ is not a D9 but the same hydraulic concepts apply.

The transmission pan is very well protected by the skidplate. There are a lot of us in this forum running a transmission temperature sensor mounted in the transmission pan who spend a lot of time rolling over big rocks where sensor damage is never a problem.

Well I just looked over the hydraulic schematic of the 42rle. The manufacturer shows the temp sensor in the sump were one to be factory installed. Although I personally disagree with Daimler Chrysler on this, they engineered and built it so in the sump it shall be installed.
I don’t have a temp sensor installed in my TJ, but if I did, it would be in the outlet to cooler just because.

The problem with this is the temperature output of the torque converter when it's generating heat will be easily over 250 so you'd get used to that number. If the torque converter is locked and you are running that same temp you could be in first stage overheat on the transmission. With the gauge on the output you essentially have to guess how much heat is in the system based on how you are driving and not many people are going to be good at that. That's why the output temperature isn't used or recommended by almost anybody. Between the two the transmission pan temp is a more reliable indicator of how much heat the transmission is dealing with. The higher output temperatures from the torque converter are less of an issue because the cooler is much more effective the higher the temperature differences get so the temps dumped back in the pan are often way below the spikes you'd see in the output.

Just my opinion overall, something for you to consider. It's no big deal that we see it different.

No not at all. Since I didn’t consider the role of the lockup clutch in the grand scheme of things, I have since retracted my previously erroneous statements.
That said, engineers have been known to F up, but not in this case.
 
I enjoy the discussion and didn't know that bit about the Cat equipment and where they have the temp sensor. Good info in my book regardless.
Most large equipment manufacturers do the same. Again a TJ is not a bulldozer or a loader. I jumped the gun on all this without a thorough understanding of the concept. Although the TJ and say, a D9 hydraulic control are similar, there are some significant differences in oil flow which I discovered have a great impact on where the oil temp should be measured and why.
 
Well, after reading what has been posted I think I'll make an effort to install the sending unit in the pan.
Is there a good location to braze a bung into the stock pan or will I need to purchase an aftermarket unit?

Allot of people use the stock pan, I think there's a good place on the front driver side. You can search for pictures of it or somebody might post theirs. I have an aluminum pan so it wont help much, you don't need an aftermarket pan.
 
I wish I had a photo of my sensor's location for you. But it's easy to immediately see the best location on the pan as soon as you remove it and look at the valve body shape above it.
 
The only reason I got a new pan when adding my temp gauge/sensor is that I also wanted a pan with a drain plug.
