So Net Neutrality was repealed

I'm curious to know everyone's thoughts regarding this issue. Feel free to chime in even if you don't care much.

I am kinda half and half on it.. This is my understanding:

Internet service providers can charge premiums for websites to access their "pipelines" and be accessible by that particular internet service provider's customer. I've heard people say "ISPs can also charge their customers more to access those sites" which worries me a little, but would that potentially create a more consistent market for internet access? What internet will you choose, the one with DLC packages, or the one where you buy it and that's that. I personally feel spoiled with my internet at 130 mbps down and 20 mbps up.. I wouldn't think twice about cutting my speed in half if my current ISP tried selling me DLC and a smaller company promised me the full experience for the same price but half the speed.

I mean.. I think in this situation, an ISPs decision will ultimately force consumers to vote with their wallets.

The future obviously holds the answers, but I find it particularly fun to speculate on stuff like this.

The evil ISPs (those that already manipulate your DNS queries, inject content into their monetized content into the web pages you browse, and so forth) will not only have carte blanche now to do further evil, but they will shift a lot of that grotesquely made ad rev (eg, practices that the EU’s GDPR aims to stop for their people) from the googles and facebooks of the world.

Unfortunately, American internet users are a meat market of “interests” that are collected, analyzed (stored forever), bought and sold. Whether you realize it or not, you’re also judged for those interests and we’re starting to see some of the effects of how big data analytics is starting to (1) pay off for those that invested in the technologies and (2) are hurting certain internet demographics.

The pool of media diversity is also shrinking. I suggest you start by reading what some of the EFF.org has summarized on just how little news we’ll receive once this is a done deal. The ISPs and those that are paying top dollar to deliver “news” will soon be the only sources for current events that you’ll be able to get.

I’ll leave it to you to decide, but IMHO it sucks and seriously adds to my growing wishes of getting out of the industry all together!

Good to get an expert to weigh in on the topic! I do not agree with them being able to keep and store all of that info but let's be honest, the media in this country has been corrupt and lazy for a LONG time in the USA. And I am not talking about "muh fake news" or any of that. I just mean that for years the media has bombarded us with bad news over anything good just because it sells, not because it's what is good for us to know, you know what I mean?

I mean... I guess maybe the silver lining could be that soon I'll never see another buzzfeed article get shared online...

See that was kind of my thought to begin with but it's hard to find other people that feel the same way. I mean it would really suck if it blew up in our faces and we end up paying like $400 a month for internet or whatever, but I feel like the market would balance itself out.. People wouldn't want to pay that much and they'll lose customers. People are at least smart enough to know that the internet doesn't cost money, the infrastructure it uses costs money. I think people would start holding feet to the fire if prices went up and the quality stagnated.

Honestly, while I am a tech guy myself, I don't have enough knowledge on the matter of net neutrality to give a unbiased opinion. I think this is one of those things where we will have to see how it plays out in the long run.

I don't think it will be as bad as everyone thinks it will. I only say that because everyone likes to get so dramatic about things like this when they happen, but more often than not, things turn out to be okay. Hey, I could be wrong, but we'll see.

All I know is I pay enough for my internet as it is!

I couldn't have said it better myself, I fear what will happen. This is going to probably directly affect my career. I am not sure in what way, but it is not good for the Internet purists, but I suspect that what will come out of it will be some sort of pseudo Internet. I am hoping there will be some sort of underground Internet like we used to have. (for instance TOR) You know the one with text based browsing and bulletin boards. Something that we will use and the government or FCC wont care. Who knows maybe small ma and pa's ISP's will pop back up with faster cli based Internet plans for us techies. I am not sure how they will get around the new laws, but I am not sure how Uber got around all of the Taxi cab laws, but they did.

As for the WWW I personally believe it will get mundane as it kind of already has with all of the advertisements and BS. it used to be when you looked up something in Yahoo or Google you got discussions first then last and now it isn't even an option. You know where you click "Shopping" "images" "etc." Anywho, I think the Internet is going to turn into interactive cable TV, and we are going to pay a mint for it.

I agree also with you that it is going to turn into censored media. As it is, I haven't paid for TV since 2005 because it was so mundane and full of ads. In the early days of TV you got free stations that were riddled with ads, and you could pay a premium for cable TV that didn't have ads. That was the benefit of paying for TV, but then cable got just as riddled with ads as free TV, so finally I got bored of it, and turned to the Internet. Well they just followed me there, and now it is mundane and corporate. Hopefully something new will come out of this, and we can just leave this mess behind too.

Reese, I am pretty sure the FCC is not voting to give this to the people. I am sure they are going to have a strong hold in it, and they are a part of the government, so you can bet it will not be good.

At the end of the day, I don't think this is about making the Internet better. I think it is about money, and big business. Once everything gets too expensive people will stop buying computers, and just go to back to the stores again, well the ones that are left.

I am curious to see how this will affect retailers like Amazon. If they have to pay more to get to us, will they still be able to compete? And what about smaller sites like overstock, if they can't afford to pay as much as Amazon to compete will they just go away?

I certainly hope you’re smart enough to realize that “Big Government” is owned by “Big Corporation”. Our government hasn’t represented “We The People” for a very long time. It is really getting to the point that we need a complete revamp of “our” government and start lawfully executing these treasonous bottom feeders that sell out our interests in favor of corporate interests. We need term limits for every elected/appointed political position and every single politician should make the same average income as their constituents. A politician should absolutely not enter their position as a “regular Joe” and leave a millionaire. When a politician is found to have intentionally/maliciously/negligently violated their oath to protect the constitution and serve the American people they should be held accountable and tried in a court of law for treason or any number of other crimes they committed while in office. I guarantee that if we actually ran our own government and held these bottom feeders accountable in such a manner that things would get turned around rather quickly. After watching that assclown religious zealot Comey sugarcoat the FBI’s findings on HRC’s absolute negligent and unlawful violations of mishandling classified information, it’s apparent that even our countries most prestigious federal law enforcement agency is in the pockets of the elite... and the elite are or answer only to “Big Corporation”. Corporate “donations” to politicians should be illegal... I can’t think of any U.S. citizen regardless of political affiliation that would disagree with that - but because the U.S. government is owned by those same corporations, that will never be made into law.

With that said, the internet was just fine prior to Net Neutrality and based on what I understand, Net Neutrality severely limited the ability for new ISPs to enter the market, further solidifying the monopolies we have today. Now that Net Neutrality is on it’s way out, perhaps we will start to see some competition again. If Comcast wants to try to sell internet access in chunks like they do with cable television, then I’ll vote with my wallet and choose the ISP that doesn’t do that. If prices increase and quality declines, most other people will also vote with their wallets. I’m sure Trump urged FCC chairman Ajit Pai to revoke Net Neutrality. Why? I don’t know. Maybe he truly thinks it will help spur market competition or maybe he did so because the big ISPs wanted him to (because then they CAN charge for ridiculous things like an “email bundle” is a “steaming package”). I really don’t know what’s going to happen... but I do believe the market will balance it out. We will find out soon enough. Basically the internet was just fine before Obama decided to add net neutrality. It wasn't broken back then so I am sure it won't be broken now either. I am also in the tech industry from developer/dba to server/system admin. The less the government controls the better it is for all of us.
