Anyone here know anything about stage lighting? I've been tasked to find an "affordable" portable stage lighting system for our club. All I know is that I want cheap, high up, and bright...

Not much on lighting but I do know sound. I’ve used American musical supply for years. They carry a variety of stage and DJ lighting and accessories. They always ship fast and free. Definitely worth a look as they have a massive selection.
I'll take a look - my problem is that I don't know the square root of fuck all other than they need to be high and bright!
What is the goal of the lighting system? Stage lighting... individual lighting. Can you hang a trapeze? Do you have the ability to hang lights in front of the state? Is there power available? What's the amperage of the circuits where you'd connect them... and so on....
Lots into this. While not a specific area of my architectural experience I have done a few performance venues. My deficits in this area are in the LED lighting area. Last time I did it LED's were not reliable enough to use. Heat issues.

Darn it all. Too bad you're not on FB. I know a guy who was a local until a few years ago that is a full on professional stage monkey. All he does is go wheeling and travel all over the US to set up and tear down big stage events.
And his only world is FB, I take it.
Oh well - I'm sure there's a forum somewhere for these types, I just need to get off my ass and find it. They just bought a pair of really nice/fancy stage lights, but don't know what they have or their capabilities. It looked like they were more of an accent lite than anything from what they were doing with them the other nite - but the lady who bought them is going to send me the name and model so I can look them up. That'll be a start, at least.

Feel free to shoot me any questions you have. I work in the entertainment business … I stage manage bands that tour the world. I know a lot of “lighting guys” and several companies that install lights, sound and video that can help you out.
There is no real cheap way of doing lights… you will need power for a dimmer led lights are used almost on all tours… motors to lift a truss a console to control them cable it all adds up pretty quick.

First question: How many "tungsten equivalent" watts do I realistically need to light a 20x20 stage. Then "how little can I get away with" and still have the dancers visible to the audience? I see all kinds of self contained portable systems, most of them are obviously too dim, but I've seen some (in person) that were quite adequate for a small dance show.

You can easily light a 20x20 stage with 6-500w par cans just white light. 4 forward wash and 2 side lights. But all you will get is a white wash. You can pick up some led color changing lights that use less wattage a simple lighting console twice as many fixtures.
Look into Chauvet stage lighting packages.
