Gear growling noise

I need expert help…

2000 TJ 2.5L has a growling noise coming from what seemed to be the tranny. Only shows up when moving but goes away when clutch is pressed. Happens in all gears, reminds me of driveshaft noise, speeds up and slows down with RPM’s. What I have done… Complete engine tranny & transfer case rebuild with new clutch and throw out bearing and new front wheel hubs. Removed front driveshaft and drove, noise still present. Serviced front and rear differentials and no appearance of wear or issues.

Have you checked the lubricant level and the condition of the gear lube in the transmission ?

It was just rebuilt and has all new fluid. I will double check the transfer case level though because it was the first to get rebuilt.

I know you said all gears but does it make the noise in 4th gear?

Have you tried removing the rear driveshaft and driving the Jeep in 4-HI?

yes to all gear including 4th. Basically under load, I can drive down the road, push the clutch in, in any gear, 2WD, 4WD 4WD low and the noise goes away.

Taking the rear shaft out is my next move and see if that could be the culprit, but I don’t think so.
