Kind of a weird one for you guys.

I just got off a 12 hour shift, finally got to bed before I had to be up in 4 hours again for another one. I wake up to a horn BLARING in my street and not letting off so I go outside in my underwear ready to slap the shit out of someone because I’m tired and grumpy, just to find out my own horn was going off. The jeep hadn’t been running in a few hours, no one touched it, it just went off.

I disconnected the negative on the battery and went back to bed. Woke up, pulled the relay for the horn, reconnected and went back to work.

How would you go about diagnosing this? I do not mess with electricity at all because it scared the dogshit out of me so I don’t even own an meter or anything. If I disconnect the steering wheel and put the relay back in, will that tell me it’s a contact issue with the horn plate in the steering wheel? Would it still be possible for the horn to go off if the steering wheel was disconnected? Never had a problem like this before.

This recently happened to me. I went through the usual suspects and it turned out my issue was the copper pad itself. I could not find a replacement that looked like mine (rectangular) so I used a razor blade to separate the plastic. I then used a couple rows of scotch tape to keep the copper pads from touching. I glued everything back in place and horn work just fine now.

Here is what I’d like to do next given I can’t find a new replacement pad. I’d like to add in a horn cutoff switch in case this happens again I can quickly disconnect. I’d also like to add a secondary switch so that I have a horn already ready to go when I have to implement the cutoff.

Any thoughts on the best way to add these in? I’m guessing I’ll need to run wires from the switch panel in the dash to the horn relay to add the second switch. Any ideas how best to add this in so it doesn’t interfere with the current horn?
