What difference in steering column between auto and manual?

Can anyone tell me the differences?

I see different part numbers for my 2002 auto vs manual. Was going to possibly buy a tilt column for mine from a part out Jeep but mine is an auto trans and the partout is a manual trans.

The only difference I know of regarding manual and auto column is the button to unlock and remove the key on a manual. However, I'm not sure whether it's part of the ignition switches or not.

For 03-06, the manual trans key removal button and automatic shift interlock mechanisms are in the plate below the key cylinder and actuator pin. The manual plate has the button sticking out of the column and the automatic has a cable attached to the shifter. Both are interchangeable to the steering column. The two piece plastic column covers are specific to the interlock. The manual trans key removal button needs a hole for the button.

So you think I could swap over my auto mechanism parts from my current column as long as I get the lower shroud with the hole for the button?

If the earlier stuff is like the later, then I would think so. @starkey480, is familiar with early TJ trans swaps. He might know.

When I put in a new steering column in mine years back, I don't remember if I asked for a manual one or not. I only asked for one that had tilting. I got it from Davey's Jeep at the time.

Im not sure other than I didn’t have to swap anything regarding my steering column when I went from a manual to auto. I’ve been told there is a difference in the key lock for the ignition so I guess it depends on how much you value that being exactly the way it is oem
