A lesson learned—keep it light and nimble!

Honestly, I've thought through the OEM half doors and while they are beautiful, they are not my cup of tea. I prefer the Savvy trail doors.

Can you run soft uppers with the Savvy trail doors? It's very common to get rained on here when wheeling, which makes the ability to run soft uppers a must for me.

I've read in a couple different places that yes you can use the Rugged Ridge or the OEM half uppers in the Savvy TJ half doors, but I haven't been able to find any pictures showing them together.

This was both a learning experience and therapy to help me get through some tough times. The gears are now setup and I'm closing in on finishing this HP30 build.

I don’t know. I’m not planning uppers. I like the Savvy inside latch location and no paddle outside.

I was following along thorough the process in your other thread. Glad you were able to get it done, and done well!

Would you still do it yourself next time, or let a shop do it?

Even if I spend a little more, there is satisfaction in knowing that you did the work!
 
It feels good to have this one almost done. Hole is drilled for the wiring and the gears are complete. The final pattern is something I can live with, and the numbers are:

- Backlash = .009
- Pinion Shims = .077
- Ring Gear Side Shims = .053
- Non Ring Gear Side Shims = .047
- Pinion Bearing Pre-load Shims = .067
- Pinion Bearing Pre-load = 15 inch lbs

It is. But, I believe that it was not the correct gear right from the factory. They wanted to manufacture same gears for auto and manual, which have to be a compromise.
So for for manual 6 speed 4.10 is little too high for 31, and for auto is little too low. I am running 31s with 4.56 gears and 42RLE and it is awesome. Not too high and not too low. Gets 2500RPM at 70MPH.

Yes, but that’s not the whole story. The 4.10 ratio came behind three different transmissions with different ratios. They can’t all be best or right from the factory

I'm all too aware of how high geared over drive is with the 42rle, and I know personally how bad it sucks with 4.10 gears and 31s, but as has been stated multiple times by Blaine, the O/D Off button is right at your finger tips! (and I use it frequently where I live). I don't even want to imagine what it would be like with 31s and 3.73 gears or worse yet higher diff gears... or a 4 cylinder!! But aside from the OD I find even in high range the gearing is about perfect for all around use.

Yes it was a comprimise, 4.10s were the go to for 4 cylinders in most TJ applications. Behind the 42RLE they are plenty low enough until you hit the reduclous overdrive. (yes I have come to hate it in a very short amount of time at 5000 feet and hilly roads) I'm half tempted to swap to a manual but on the other hand I like the idea of adding the Rubicrawler too. Just my opinion, (because I have no idea what the engineers thought were) but the OD being that high geared probably had something to do with fuel economy on the highway. Jeep had to engineer these things as a compromise for every potential buyer, not just the avid off roader.

So you are running 31 inch tires with 4.10 gears? Don't you feel that the RPM is little lower than it should?

I'm running 4.10 for now. Since the rear is a Rubicon 44, it wasn't worth swapping both to go 4.56. I have a 5.13 set of gears, but those are in reserve until another evolution of the build. FWIW, I've been running 4.10s for a while and it hasn't been that bad, with the OD switch.
 
If all goes well, tomorrow the stock swaybar links will be cut off and I'll weld in the track bar reinforcement plate. After that new balljoints and the knuckles, prepped for the tie rod flip.

The pattern looks good, or going to get better than that. You have outer bearing preload spec, is that the pinion bearings? You are preloading both pinion bearings not just the outer.
