Dana 30 & 35 Re-gear Assistance

Okay - back in action. Got my Revolution gears. 4.56 this time.

Ring gear is installed using 7/16” Dana bolts torqued and red loctited @ 100 ft lbs.

Reused the factory 0.042” shim. BL is just a hair under 0.007”





Thoughts? Too deep? @hosejockey61 @Blackjack

I would say you are correct. @machoheadgames try adding .003 to the pinion and see what that does. You will most likely want to open the backlash a hair to go with it.

Okay - swapped out the pinion shim from 0.042 to 0.045.

Kept the carrier shims the same which out the backlash at 0.0039, so I shimmed the carrier left a tad while maintaining pretty much the same preload. Got backlash to right at 0.008, right in the center of Revolution spec.

Obviously I’m pretty untrained, any concerns with what looks to be a hard line near the root? Especially on coast, not so much on drive. If you think it looks good then I have no concerns (once checking a few times around the ring).

the line at the root is only part of the equation. If you have a good pattern like yours, then the line is most likely caused by too much paint. As it wipes, it will build up there. If anything, I would say you are MAYBE 1 thou shallow. But leave it. I would run that any day.

Gotcha - sounds good. I’m going to press on the permanent carrier bearings and run it again in a few spots to see if it’s good and will post back.

Other than that I’ll either decide if I’m going to shim the pinion preload or use the sleeve and from there will button it up.

I’ll be turning this into a Dana 30 thread soon as well! Gonna work on that once the 35 is done.

Crush sleeve eliminator all the way. If you ever need to change the pinion seal you won't need to take out the carrier.

Yeah I’m aware of the benefits, just not really sure I like what I received. The shims have decent bends in them. Whereas with the crush sleeve I have a few of them on hand and probably could be done with it.

Agreed. I think his kit is actually a Ratech kit. Apparently you can get the necessary 0.002 adjustments from 0.020 to 0.050 with the 5-shim quantity they send. Obviously they need to not be in poor shape upon arrival though.

I have used Ratech for a long time but they too are not the same as they were just a few years back. You used to get nearly double the shims they come with now.

All right, I’m back at it, but this is Dana 30 edition. The Dana 35 is still not 100% done because I got busy and also when I installed the final bearings I ended up losing the setup a bit, but I’m close for sure. More on that later. Working on the Dana 30 currently to try and get it done.

I’m at 0.008 Backlash

What do yall think, 3-5 thou deeper at the pinion? I am running a 0.070” shim stack on the pinion as my starting point because this axle didn’t have a great starting point. 0.030 slinger between inner bearing/gear head, 0.020 baffle behind inner race (standard), and I added 0.020 shim behind race. From factory I would have had a thicker slinger somewhere in the range of 0.050-0.055, so with the regear they give you a thinner slinger and a shim pack to make it up.

Added around 0.0035 to the pinion depth. It’s kind of tricky because the 0.020 shim I had behind the race was 1 shim but it kind of had a bend in it making it more like a 0.026 in some areas…didn’t realize that when I installed it. But it was a 0.020 shim.

So I swapped that out for a 0.010 and a 0.014 and I’ve landed here. Without touching carrier shims, backlash went from 0.008 to 0.006.





My thoughts are maybe drive side is okay but coast looks weird? I wish I were better at the reading patterns. I don’t see a hard line on bottom of the drive side and there is yellow at the top so….

Try going in .003 more and see if the pattern flips.
