Re-gearing for 35s (need some build advice)

With the 4.0 I would go 5.13 all day, with the diesel I have 2.0 TDI, I have all the torque I want with 4.56s (nv3550 / 35s)

Until you go offroad and you can't get it into the turbo because the rpms are too low.then gearing matters as much or more than a gasser. N/A diesels are turds

Generally I agree with you, depends on the turbo you have though, unless I really have to idle up something I make 4-8psi at 1500rpm. Which is covers the vast majority of scenarios I’ve ever put myself in.

Why would you want to run a Jeep at 1500 rpm???

😳

Edit: Wait, that may just be me….🙂

Ten years as a my daily driver up until recently. Never once have I thought the gearing should be higher.

Just replying to your comment about Denver being flat. I'm at 5.13 and happy about it but I'm up and down hills a lot

If you don't crawl much,or other scenarios where you get bogged down thats ok. Otherwise it can lead to a lot of slipping the clutch.

In my personal experience diesels don't get an exemption offroad from low gearing.diesel pickups, tractors, etc all fall on their face.On the highway its a different story

Regardless,sounds like a fun rig!
What boost does a stock tdi make? How far can they be pushed?

Stock really depends on which engine, I have a PD130 (BHW Engine code) that made 134hp stock, with my current models I’m sitting around 190hp/330tq I’ve seen guys push PD engines to around 275hp /400tq mark, the newer common rails, have been close to 400hp with compounds.

5.13 user here. Was my daily for a lot of years and I enjoyed it. I traveled all over the state. Cresting Eisenhower at 60 mph is easy on 35s.

I am surprised Edge was swaying to 4.88s. I haven't gone there in years but they're the more popular regear shop in the front range.

Advise or work from a shop is only as good as the guy giving it. Better to develop personal relationships with individuals than trust the places they work!

If he's a cj guy he'd probably recommend higher gearing that the granny 4 speed guys use as a compromise?

Buy the guy dinner and tell him he's cute, so he recommends the right gear ratios?

From a installation standpoint, the Edge Automotive certainly know what they're doing. Suggesting 4.56-4.88 though...

The guy that runs it is super nice, and maybe that is the issue. Maybe he has gotten away from the technical side of things and is now focused more on keeping customers happy. I ran into him on the trail earlier this year and he had probably 20-25 jeeps following him. He builds up the clientele and takes them out on the trail to show off their new build, which I guess I understand from a business standpoint. But it really made for a miserable day following them

If that keeps you warm at night sure? Better would be finding good techs by getting to know them and their work.then you'll know if they have good advise.

I don't have time for that and neither do the techs. 🤣

I've used them. Feel like they are a very knowledgable "4x4" shop, not necessarily Jeep. They did a good job for what I needed, I'd use them to gear but I'm currently on the hunt for a Jeep specific mechanic too. Got burned bad by "The TJ Shop". Think he finally went out of business
