What did you do to your TJ today?

I daily mine as well. Have yet to come with a reason not to.

Been doing it for about fifteen years.. I don't consider it hardcore, it's just a bajillion times more comfortable than sleeping on the ground. In all the years I am hammock camping I've had two encounters I could have done without. One was a dog that found me and nudged me in the middle of the night. I startled it and when it took off it pulled up one of the tarp guy lines as it took off, so I know I didn't imagine it. The second encounter? I have no idea what it was. I heard it clip one of the guy lines and that was it. Seen tons of wildlife.. Bears, deer, rattle snakes, coyote.. you name it. Never had an issue.

Tell me this.. how does a tent protect you? If something wants you (two, four or no legs) is the thin fabric of a tent going to help? I'm up and down the east coast and have been in Virginia backpacking. I worry more about two legged than four. Camp hygiene is critical. I use a "stinky bag". DCF sack that holds everything that has a scent. Snacks, lip balm, wrappers, gum.. all stay in the stinky bag. That bag, plus my fanny pack and cook kit all go in my food bag which is ALWAYS hung away from camp. I NEVER camp at shelters.. they are the drive-thru for bears, raccoons, porcupines, mice, chipmunks etc. Plus, I hate people.

I have a second steering wheel and a RedLineGoods leather skin I have been procrastinating on installing. I should sell it. I bought a second wheel and had it professionally wrapped with some added padding.

You're right about the tent is no protection. Have you ever played pick-a-boo with a baby? If I can't see them, they can't see me!🫣🤣
Funny encounter with the dog!
My leather Steering wheel looks just like yous but with black thread .

I tried installing the RedLineGoods cover. The foam didn't line up with the recesses in the wheel for the leather seams and although they give you "enough thread to do it three times over so you can keep working on it" (paraphrasing) the reality is if you don't nail it the first time the leather will have stretched too much to try a second time. It's on the Jeep but I hate it.

I have a second wheel and the plan is to come up with my own templates and practice using cheap PU Leather from Amazon. Once I have it right I will get some high quality leather.

I didn't like the thread that came with mine so bought a nicer, thicker waxed thread on Amazon. You're right about leather stretching and getting it right the first time. I took my time, lots of pushing, pulling and adjusting as i went to get it snug and even. It's on so tight I can't twist it at all.

I didn't trust my skills to get it perfect and since it would be in my hands virtually every day, I needed it to be perfect. I purchased a second wheel and had sent right to the guy that did the work. Chris @ LeatherGoods. Looks like his website is no longer around. He was great to work with. The leather isn't a perfect match to the shift boot and arm rest I bought from RedLine, but it's close enough and the stitching and the areas around the spokes came out great.

The areas around the spokes took some thinking and planning.
