Everett, WA has a city ordinance against outdoor clothes lines...and washing your car curbside...and having "for sale" signs in your vehicles...

God, I really need to move to Idaho...

I got a line inside the house, you can run thru every room, couple hooks in ceiling, just got to duck sometimes, if your walking thru with no lights on. but if you get hit in the face with a pair of underwear, ther clean.....

I put up a 6' fence in my back yard so that the neighbors wouldn't have to see my cars. I mean, I get it. Not everyone is like me (I'd be happy as a pig in shit living in a wrecking yard!). So, I try to abide by their "rights", without having to give up my own. It's common courtesy. But still, Idaho beckons...

No one commented on the ordinance against 'for sale' signs in vehicles. That's about the most stupid thing I've heard...why, does Everett believe a for sale sign in a vehicle is the inevitable first step down that destructive path to urban blight?

Are you allowed to have a for sale sign in your yard to sell a home?

My sister's HOA here in Salem, Oregon won't allow her husband to park his brand new commercial plumbing van in the driveway, because it has his companies logo on the side of it. This is a brand new, 2017 Ford Transit van too. Not some crappy POS leaking oil everywhere.

Apparently you can't have a vehicle parked in your driveway with company logos on it.

Yep, that doesn’t shock me one bit. HOAs are complete bullshit, unless you’re some yuppie snob who has nothing better to do that whine and complain about every little thing your neighbors do.

yet still the HOA's are popular. I for the life of me do not know why. They must market it well here. We rented when we first moved here and we got ridiculous tickets like leaving the garbage cans on the street passed 5. We never got home before 7 so you can imagine how many tickets we got for that. We got a ticket to trim a tree that wasn't our tree but grew over the fence into our yard so we were responsible for it. I was there long enough to know that when I bought a house I would not put up with that kind of shenanigans. It was not cool. I was just talking to a dude a work who loves his HOA and is pissed because they just passed a HOA ordinance that now everybody has to have at least 2 trees in their yard and not everybody did it yet so he is pissed. How ridiculous is that? Now they are telling them how to decorate their yard.

The weirdest part is the HOA has cookie cutter huge houses that all look alike and are selling for 500K. Now they are telling them they have to have 2 of a certain kind of tree in their yard, along with the other weird shit and rules. Oh and the common HOA color here is pink. You can choose between 3 different shades of pink for your house color.

In my neighborhood, we do not have a HOA and we don't have any crazy colored houses although if someone did paint their house yellow with blue polka-dots. I would encourage it. I like freedom of expression and it would easier to tell people directions. "I live two houses down from the Yellow house with the polka-dots." As it is, my non-HOA neighborhood is pretty boring.

My ex and son live in a brand new neighborhood of $500,000 homes. Used to be nothing but grassy fields. Anyways, her husband was telling me that one neighbor down the road painted his house a combination of (allowed) colors, when you're only supposed to use one or the other. He's so upset by it, he's already talked about selling the new house that they had built and have only lived in for about five months. HOAs are there for a reason, he claims. I'm still waiting for a logical reason...

Here some of the HOA dues are 150 bucks a month, but when you get down to it it is just another layer of government taxes. So you pay property tax and HOA tax, so that your 500K house can look exactly the same as your neighbors. As you can tell I am not a fan!

We do hang clothes on the line when weather permits, about 80% of the time. Double good, the environment and $ savings. Fortunate that we don't have to but we like to play games like if we do this we can buy that. digging some trenches in the yard now for drainage and one for new electrical to my shop. Makes the work rewarding. We also try to sell things we aren't using when we want to buy something new. You'd be surprised how much stuff people leave laying around and never use. I applaud you for your efforts. Just because a person has money to spend it doesn't mean you can't still have fun finding ways to save and help the environment

I've always tried to save money any way I could. One of the main ways is doing my own repairs around the house and on my vehicles. My wife and I talked about a clothesline years ago but the pollen is so bad these days we decided against it. Coupons when grocery shopping. Waiting for sales on items before buying. The best savings was getting a job at a college for the tuition benefits. Good job with good benefits. Looking for ways to save is something that becomes ingrained in you. Things have eased up over the years but I still stop and think about purchases, big or small. The opportunities to spend on a Jeep seem never ending. Nowadays with the internet and credit cards the temptation to buy whatever you dream of us incredible. Keeping up with the Joneses has fucked up a lot of people.

Do you all live in planned communities with amenities that there is an HOA? The only time I see HOA is when I had a townhouse just outside Disney in FL but they had pool, clubhouse, sports courts etc to maintain. I did not care, as I did not live there, just owned it to rent out. I keep telling my wife when we retire out of NY I am not going to a community, as I know they won't like the fact that there will likely be 6 cars for 2 people, a lift in the garage and air tools going off at all times.
