NSG370 vs 42RLE

The 999 has a mechanical lockup torque converter back in the 80’s, it was electric in the 94 and newer

I'm currently working on one out of an 89 that is a non-lockup. The amount of variations is kinda crazy.

Send a picture of the input shat without the converter, they have lockup but no electrical solenoid versions

It doesn't have the nub on the end. The splines go right to the end (never mind a tiny chamfer). Also the valve body doesn't have the TCC module (different from the solenoid).

(phone died this morning, can't take pics)

The 42RLE is pretty nice to drive now that I raised the shift points a significant amount. The member who showed me how to make the changes made note of this a year or two ago in a thread, but it basically went unnoticed. I was lucky that he was kind enough to reach out and help me learn how to make the changes.

IMO, raising the 3-4 up-shift and 4-3 kick-down schedules have unlocked my setup into truly being enjoyable. With OD on in town, it's easier to keep it in 3 than it is to drop it to and keep it in 4 (I have to basically be coasting). I don't need to touch the OD switch at all, which used to be a must unless I wanted to be miserable.

Edit: I used an HP Tuners MPVI2+, which can adjust the 05/06 shift points….I don’t know if the HP Tuners devices can adjust the shift points in the 04 and earlier models.

Noticed the post as well and wondered why it didn’t really peak any interest. Just like here, seems nobody is interested in better shift points on the 42rle.
Really wish this would work with the separate TCM on the 03s and 04s.

Read some more. Seems like everybody is interested in better shift points on teh 42rle.

The interest is absolutely there. The problem is that it isn't an option for 2003-04. Then there is the cost of entry. After that, the very few people who even know this is a thing to do are reluctant to learn a very unfamiliar territory.

We can't even get people to regear properly.

I partially agree with both of you.

Some 03/04 guys care enough to wish it could be done.

But a very few percentage of 05/06 auto folks cared enough about Juggernaut’s older post, and posts since then, to make the changes.

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought he was saying no one cared about shift points period, not just Juggernauts.

This definitely got my interest in searching more for the details!

I agreed with the majority of his message, and, you weren’t wrong to point out there are 03/04 guys who would love to make adjustments.

We can all agree that more than nobody but less than everyone are interested.

If 05/06 folks knew how normal the shifting could be, there’d be a 15+ page thread of thrilled people thanking Juggernaut. But that likely won’t happen because the few folks who know about it won’t pay-to-play and/or go through the effort to make it happen.

Also, things might have been different if certain ignorant dinosaurs, with too much weight, didn't fight prospects of innovation on things they know little about.

What’s the difference between Juggernauts tune and WranglerFix?

He customized his tune for the RSI (Jezza) turbo.

But I believe you are asking more about the shift points, which are much higher. I went a bit higher than him after using his numbers as my starting point (our gearing is different). Being able to lean on JN made it possible because I wouldn’t have wanted to mess something up. Just like most GUI programs, their editor looks daunting until you use it after things are explained to you.

My 40% throttle position for the 3-4 shift point is around 3700 rpms…that’s up from around 2500 rpms in stock form.

I don’t necessarily need it to be that high, but it provides me a lot of run way where I can ease off a bit and it will shift before then based on throttle position and how fast I’m traveling.

My 30% shift point is around 3200 so the computer shifts between 3200-3700 when I’m between 30% and 40%. If I let off more, it shifts based on my lower % settings.

I can kick down from 4-3 super easy coming out of a 20mph to 40mph coast, so it wants to be in 3 rather than 4 until I’m in highways speeds or coasting at lower speeds. The 42RLe now acts more like a normal auto trans from that era.

Not to interrupt but I was under the impression wrangler fix only fixes the heat issue in the PCM. They are also offering program changes?

Not at this time. Unfortunately, he’s in a world where the enforcers have been cracking down hard on the diesel tuning folks and they’d likely lump him in (wrongfully imo).

Edit: @ChadH this might change…may be available in the near future.

Not sure if this is relevant to you but I have a 42rle in my LJ and hated it with 4.88's and 35's. On 33's it sucked too, just not as hard!!
I'm running 5.38 now and I love it.

I would run 33s and 5.38s without a worry. The Grim Jeeper website's chart numbers back this up.

Sorry, no intent to stir the pot. I guess Mike understood and brought my thoughts on point.

On another note, there has got to be an advanced diagnostic tool or software that allows access to the ‘03 and ‘04 TCM to make those adjustments. Anyone know what Chrysler used back in the day?

I’m sorry for my confusion, but looking at your profile you are running a wranglerfix pcm. So, did you modify the wranglerfix pcm following JN?

All good man.

I purchased a WF PCM last fall. I was able to load the Banks tune into it, which was incorrectly thought to not be possible. I did a short write up on it for the Banks guys so they'd know the WF PCM is a viable option.

Mark's PCM is also accessible via HP Tuners, which is the method I used to raise the shift points. I already had the device in storage from when I got the 4.0L FRP tune a few years back. Juggernaut informed me that adjusting the shift points or raising the speed limiter would not adjust the tune itself. This means that my PCM should still be fully CARB compliant through Bank's CARB EO.

Edit: Mark mentioned that the tuned version of his PCM might be available soon for non-CARB states.
