Rear End Confusion

So My build sheet says I have Dana 30 on the front, Dana M35 on the rear
WITH Command Track

My question is this
1-Do I have limited slip in the rear ?
2-what gear oil should I be using?
3-what gasket INTEAD of RTV --link please

its got 42,000 on it and i dont think its ever been changed out :(
 
Geez...only 42K miles? Dana 30 front diff and Dana 35 rear use 80/90 or 75/85 type GL5 gear oil. The 4wd configuration is "command trac" which takes ATF of your favorite flavor. dex/merc III is fine as well as M1 synthetic type lubes.

Does your build sheet say "Trac-Lok"? That is limited slip. Command-Trac is what Jeep calls your 4 wheel drive (having a Transfer case with 4hi and 4lo)

The front end is the way you’re looking. The rear end is the way you’re not looking. Also, there’s a pointy thing on the front end. The rear shouldn’t have anything pointy near it.

No its an X model the covers have not been removed that i can tell

No positraction or device that would lock the two wheels together so they both provide traction.

At least according to the build sheet. Who knows what was modified by previous owners.

"IF" theres no modification and its Stock/Factory, does that mean in 4wd im actually only using "1" of the rear tires? until it slips

imOLD and in my teens you had limited slip 1-wheel rear drive
OR
posi rear end for hell of a burnout :) and launching off the line
hence all my confusion. as i know zip of 4wd
 
Correct. 4 x 4 sans lockers is one wheel in the front and one in the rear.

Command Trac is strange. That's usually in Saharas and XJs and ZJs. I think. What's your 4 wheel drive lever look like? 2wd, 4 hi, neutral and 4 low?

In normal 4x4 mode you'll have power to both wheels that have traction. When one wheel loses traction, neither wheel on that axle will have power. This is why lockers are so great. Both wheels get power no matter whether they have traction or not.

The other wheel that has traction will not be getting any power. This is why lockers are so great. Both wheels get power no matter whether they have traction or not.

so in 4wd im getting power to all 4 tires ? until one spins out front or rear then the squirrels run to the opposite side and jumps on the squirrel cage and starts running all out? until everything stops spinning

or are you saying ive got power to both wheels---1in front 1-in back until one front or rear starts spinning then it changes over to the opposite wheel on same axle

Differentials distribute torque equally.

When a tire spins with no traction, such as it’s hanging in the air, it has no torque so the other wheel on that open differential axle with traction stops spinning because torque equalization now means its torque is zero too.

This is how a differential works



You have two differentials, one in front, one in back. In two wheel drive, the rear axle is providing all the motive power. If one wheel loses traction, it will spin and you will lose motive power (since there is no resistance on the traction free tire).

In four wheel drive with open differentials (the type you have), you double the motive power applied to the ground. 1x rear axle + 1x front axle. Again, if a tire loses traction, it will spin and you’ll get no power. But, since you have two axles providing power, a tire on BOTH axles have to lose traction to stop Motive power.

So 4x4 is a misnomer, but still better than 4x2.
 
You should just build a tube buggy, that way you'll know what you have.
