Rear axle welding question

I’ve wondered about speed and heat with respect to warping potential. I assume a lower setting (power and wire speed) allows the heat the diffuse away from the work area more because it takes longer to do the same weld. So does that increase or decrease warping? As I said above, this is all new to me. My machine does have autoset (Miller multimatic 220 AC/DC) but you don’t have to use that.
several factors apply , filet or bead size desired, material composition.
heat sink is the enemy....... heat up a large area and you get more movement, your puddle should be cooling as soon as you move from it if your runnin a Haley's comet and have a 1/2' of glowing red tail your to hot.....
 
Thank you. One thing I take from that is using settings that allow you to move more quickly are helpful because the heat sink doesn’t fill up so much-correct?

they just got a couple Lincoln's in few months ago and when set by material thickness they run hotter than i run my machine for the same tasks. at the thicknesses i work with most often it slings wire, forcing you to keep up with the machine.......to me, a tool is something i control.

TBH i don't change my setting very often and control the penetration and bead manually on a range of material thicknesses.
My Miller autoset has a fairly wide range in the thickness settings for a given thickness. I move from one end of the range to the other fairly often depending on what I need it to do. We call it hot and cold 3/16" if we are in that range. There is a noticeable difference in how hot it runs. If I go from flat to vertical, I'll move it from the hot side over to the cold side and still be in the thickness range setting. For me, the autoset is a good guess, nothing more.

We also have wildly variable voltage delivery here so some days the middle of 3/16's is way too cold, other days, the middle of 1/8" is just about right for the same flattish weld.
 
Do you actually own one of Miller's Autoset welders? I do and in no way does it do that, it actually works very well.
no i just got to play with the new lincoln's....... i opted to pass on it and keep my older unit. crank 1 knob vs playing with a key pad & display.

i'm not shittin on anybodys welder, but i don't run the voltage or wire speed that machine sets for at a given thickness.

My digital Lincoln is probably 25 years old, and I usually need to add some heat or the bead wants to build up too much if I leave it in auto

My Lincoln seems to want to push a lot of wire too. I feel like it's rushing me. So, generally I dial it back one material thickness setting. That seems to work for me

Do you need to disconnect the Jeep battery cables before welding on the rear axle?

My rear control arm bracket broke off the axle (drivers side)a couple of days ago. Didn’t know what was causing the Jeep to wander back and forth going down the highway about 60 mph. Made it safely home and found the broken bracket.
Plan to get it welded back together. Anything special to do or watch out for?

Most will say to weld on a new bracket.

I wouldn't weld yours back together without a brace like this

I have a 3”-3 1/2” lift. I couldn’t find a new replacement bracket, except for this one. Do know if that would work without modifying it anyway and don’t see if it is for left or right side?
