Diesel engines are a funny topic , unless your application really can't be answered any other way , everything about a diesel is pain . Including total cost per mile costs.
My thoughts also. I have had 4 Benz diesels over the years, 1960 190Db, 1974 240D, 1979 300SD, and a 1983 300CD. The former two were NA and absolute dogs when it came to highway cruising. The latter two were 617 turbos and once spooled up, were great, the caveat being "once spooled up" From a stop, you just about needed to open the door and give them a foot assist. Those would have worked infinitely better in front of manual transmissions but Benz, for whatever reason, deemed that unnecessary for the US market. All those Benz engines were old school straight mechanical injection. Despite being a gutless wonder that would lose a drag race with a 36 hp Beetle, that 190 Db did deliver economy, about 50 mpg, and it went a 1/2 million miles.

I have a Bobcat 5600 Toolcat with the Kubota V2203 turbo engine and that even suffers for lack of power in that platform. If you have the 84" snowblower on it and anything deeper than about 8", progress is pretty slow. No way I want that engine in the early 2500 lb CJ let alone a TJ that weighs at least a 1000 lbs more.

As noted, you will never recover the expense of a diesel swap through increased economy. Along with the noise, and stink, you also get the cold start problem. Good luck getting most of them to fire up at zero degrees without some external input.

If you want cheap, light, low end torque, it's really difficult to best sbc's of any generation. Throw a couple Rotopax on the back if you are really worried about mileage or install a larger fuel tank (better).
