Swap cruise control from a 99 to an 06?

After spending a year with my ‘99 Sport I’m looking at adding a bit of interior room. I’m looking at an ‘06 LJ that has everything I want, a bunch of “improvements” that will go straight to the dumpster, but it does not have cruise control. Certainly not a deal breaker, but I like having it. Since my ‘99 DOES have CC, can I just swap the relevant parts between the two and magically have the CC working in the ‘06? I have to think there’s more to it than just moving the steering wheel, clockspring, and actuator. But maybe someone here can confirm? I’m not worried about possibly fabricating a wiring harness, but if the CC somehow depends on PCU management I guess I have my answer.

Help?

It's just the steering wheel buttons, clock spring, and actuator under the hood. If you have all of that you should be able to swap it over. The question will be if the wiring on the 06 is the same as on your 99. I don't know that it is as a lot changed from 03-06 in regard to wiring and such.

My instinct is that a 99 cruise control will not work on an 06 in part because the PCM and dash cluster is entirely different between those years.

However, if the Mopar part number of the servo is the same for those years, the swap might work. And if the buttons will also work on both the early and late TJ steering wheels.

I don't know about the '99, but the '05-'06 PCM is definitely "involved" with the cruise control. Won't cruise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear. Won't cruise below 30 MPH.

You could look at the wiring in the FSM for each year to see if they look (partially) compatible.

2003 won't cruise below 30mph, both with the nv3550 and 42rle regardless of gear. I know with the manual, the PCM had no awareness of the selected gear, and I have no reason to believe that the nsg370 is any different.

On my 2005 with NSG370, I have tried many times to get it to cruise in 3rd gear, below and above 30 MPH. It refuses. While there is no signal from the transmission to the PCM for which gear is selected, the PCM knows the speed and the RPM. This behavior did not change when I regeared from 3.73 to 4.56. We'll have to guess what goes on inside the PCM.

I'll have a look at the tune file for my dad's NSG370 06 and see if there is a why. The files from the NGC3 PCM look like they're from an entirely different vehicle from the JTEC+. There may even be a minimum cruise setting.

**Edit ** I've checked and there aren't any settings for the cruise in HPTuners. Does not mean there aren't any on the PCM, just that they aren't mapped/aren't exposed.

My 04 (JTEC+) has some tables for the automatic ratios, which is weird since I have a manual. There are weird things in these PCM files.

When I changed my 03 from manual to automatic with a 42rle from an 04, we had the PCM reprogrammed to accept the auto. It wouldn't surprise me if the programming exists for both and the difference is which set of parameters are activated.

I wonder if it also knows the crank position sensor is in the other position if you switch those. Not going to mess with that on my dad's.

On the JTEC+ it looks like this;

And back on topic for cruise control, the JTEC+ have these tables, but I don't see anything like them exposed in the 05/06 NGC3. Max RPM if set lower could lock you out of setting cruise in 3rd.

That Min 30 is irritating. I've had several other vehicles which would cruise at 25. It comes in handy when rolling through a long school zone or other slow neighborhood.

That is how you cruise control right on through a line of children crossing the street by the school while you are distracted looking at garage sale signs.

I was very confused on a trip to Europe where I rented a Merc E-Class. It had a button that sets a max speed - like a pit speed limiter. Accidentally hit the button and it wouldn't let me go above some speed - like 30kph. I was on a twisty Italian 90kph mountain road with other traffic. Not good.

Other countries do approach these things very differently

We have cell phones and super high pickup truck hoodlines for that now. No speed limiter needed. Check the stats on US pedestrian deaths.

Remember when we legalized marijuana and there was a corresponding increase in vehicle related pedestrian deaths and hit&runs?

Isn't much developed on the tuning platforms for our jeeps. There is more on one tab for an LS than the entire jtec offering. But at least we have enough to tune for engine mods and boost

Pedestrian deaths are up nationwide regardless of that state's marijuana legalization status. I'm not excusing drivers under the influence. But there are many factors affecting this metric. For one, a person hit by an SUV or "light truck" is 3 times more likely to die than someone hit by a car. This is simple physics and biology. There are fewer vital organs below your hip, than there are above them and with the exception of our old TJs, most SUVs weigh at least 1000lbs more than an equivalent car.

I'm not a small person, in the least. Considering how high the hoodline on a current model full size "light" truck comes up on me, how well are they going to be able to see a 4 year old within 4 feet?

IDK about the ‘99 servo, but the ‘06LJ will need a four wire add on to the PCM, a dash harness with the correct steering column wires, and the CC buttons for the late steering wheel (which appear to be able to swap over).

No doubt. My dad has a C5 Corvette and wants me to disable the manual shift lockout that prevents 1-2 shifts in certain situations. It has always annoyed him and I'm sure it can be disabled via software. It'll be fun to look at how much more there is to be done on that GM/LS tuning platform.

Or, in my case, that is how I keep my eyes on the street (and kids) instead of the speedometer.

Is there documentation somewhere on how to add cruise to an 05-06 which isn't pre-wired for cruise? my 05 was rental fleet spec so didn't come with the pre-wiring. all of the how-to's i've found just talk about adding the servo and steering wheel controls on jeeps that are already wired.
