Rear Storage Lockbox (Tuffy 046-01): Anyone Install One of These?

Has anyone installed one of the Tuffy "Mid Size SUV Cargo Security Lockboxes in their TJ? One their website they have a couple photos of one installed in a short wheelbase TJ but I am curious about how much space there is between the back of the front seat backs and the front of the cargo Lockbox. When Looking at the photo on their website it looks like the lockbox is positioned basically all the way back, almost against the rear door. The specs for the unit say its 27 inches Long (front to back) and when I measure my area I get about 35 1/4" before the vertical offset for the footwell of the rear seat passengers, which means there is about 8" before that offset in the floor, but the install directions seem to indicate that 2 of the 3 fasteners that hold the unit to the floor of the cargo area use the mounting location of the rear seat which seems like it would move the entire storage unit more towards the rear seats and leave more of a gap at the tailgate than the photo on their website shows.

Lastly, in a couple of the photos they show a pair of C-channel legs that lift the unit off of the floor so you could store something beneath the unit, like maybe the upper part of your half doors. Does the basic unit come with those legs, I dont really see any mention of them in the description. Just curious if anyone has installed it this way, whether it came with them or they were purchased as an accessory and if you need to drill new holes in the floor to mount it that way.

I could be wrong, but I suspect if anyone here has a Tuffy unit, it might not be the universal you posted as Tuffy makes one noted specifically for Jeep Wranglers. No idea how much difference there is between them.

Thanks, I had seen that other unit, 131-10, but I am trying to maximize the lockable area, the 046-01 unit is a bit taller 16 " high vs about 11" high for the 131-10 unit, and its about 7" longer, 27" vs about 20", thats why I was looking at the 046-01. The 046-01 dimensions are 27" L x 35 3/8" W x 16" H, and the 131-10's dimensions are 20 1/8" L x Box 34 1/4" W xx 11 3/4" H.

If I had an LJ I'd probably run with the 131-10 that one and keep the rear seat, although I really only run as a 2 seater.

I was trying to maximize the footprint area because I was thinking of putting my doggo on a nice cushy platform above whatever security box I placed in there. I do see they have this platform option, 240-01, it doesn't have a drawer, which means if I had my pooch snoozing on top I'd have to root around in the cargo enclosure without the benfit of a sliding drawer, but it does have a little lip on it that might keep the cushion/dog bed from sliding around, and its footprint seems to be the largest at 35"L x 49"W (this must include the little shelves overtop the wheel wells) x 15-17" High. The 240-01 relies on the floor of the Jeeps tub, so if it got a little wet inside the storage are might get a little wet, I currently dont have any carpeting in my TJ.

I liked the drawer option over the others you listed because with the drawer I'm not trying to dig through everything I carry to find what I need at the very back of the storage area.

Love the tuffy drawer unit I have. On this drawer unit, those legs you asked about are part of the standard mounting system. You can either mount it flush to the floor, or elevated as I have. Not sure how that works with the cabinet style box.

As Rick said, the best thing about the drawer system is how accessible everything is, especially compared to the cabinet style.

One downside - it is heavy.

The only thing I had to do was space it up enough to get over the small lip on the tailgate of the TJ....

This is how much it had to be spaced up... I used the stock hole in front and nutzerts in the rear. It was due to the bolts the hold the divider kit in place & I cut off the exposed threads of the bolts too.

I have the tuffy security box. The top lifts and the sides are attached to the tub. I added 300 lb drawer slides and a tray to mine so there is access to everything, that keeps me from having to lift the top and allows fixed storage on top of the box.

There's a generic version of this one. I bought it intending to install in my LJ. Though I have a custom cage. So it wasn't really going to fit as intended. I have it listed for sale here. Hasn't been any interest, so it might end up being included on my next run to the dump.

Someone bought it before I could get there. So ended up buying one on Amazon. It is well built, I really like it. I have it mounted right up against the rear door so that if I locked the door, it can't be opened. You can fit two of them side by side in the TJ, or you can stack them two high.

Thanks for that info about how much you needed to space things out. I think I have some sheet rubber thats about 3/16" think that I had been thinking of repurposing for this application in some manner to deal with the load floor irregularities, like those 4 tie down thingies on the floor.

Thats like melding the best of both worlds, the slightly larger (and cheaper) 240-01 "Cargo Enclosure") and one of their sliding drawer boxes. Thats also a trick tray/drawer you made (or did you find something off-the-shelf that fit perfectly), I wish I had real metal working skills to make something that would fit exactly as needed.

Tuffy doesn't have a great photo of the latching mechanism for the flip top lid but I imagine there are some sort of catch releases on both sides that are inaccessible when the Jeeps tailgate is closed and locked.

I also liked how they said that this entire unit is "easily" removable in case you needed to re-install the rear seat, based on what you know after using it, would you say that's true?

No but I have these damn things. And they rusted out and got rust all over the side of the Jeep. Ruined my opinion of Tuffy products. They were installed in 2003 when mine was new.

My drawer is all homemade. I bought a set of 300lb drawer slides and used a stainless tray for a washing machine. I had to fur the gap between the tuffy box and tray for the drawer slides.

I could remove my enclosure but it wouldn't be quick. If you want to be able to swap back and forth I would go with the box with drawer and figure out a QD system that makes it simple to remove. I don't use my back seat so my security box stays in all the time. Let me know if you want a parts list for the drawer components I used.

Hey BDub,

one other question about the factory portion of your Tuffy 240-01 Cargo Enclosure / box, if you wanted to open the top lid and have it pivot on the fasteners that are closest to the front seats;

- do you pull the top edge closest to the tailgate toward you, and that somehow moves some sort of catch far enough that you can then rotate it upward? From the security perspective I'm trying to better understand how difficult it will be for someone with sticky fingers to get into this box if the tailgate is locked.

- if the tailgate is closed and locked, it's not possible to undo the fasteners for the top pivoting lid, is that correct?
I looked at the install instructions and its hard to tell if they cut-away the diagram to make it easier for you to understand how to assemble the pieces, or if those fasteners are somewhat accessible. I realize the whole purpose of this unit is to keep things locked up but I just wanted to be sure that those fasteners are hidden when everything is assembled and locked up.

I did call Tuffy Tech support and asked a bunch of questions, including this one, but most of the questions they weren't able to answer and said they would get back to me but its been several days now.

- is there any mechanismthat keeps the top lid up and in the open position or will i need to cut down a broomstick? It doesn't look like there is a gas strut of any kind and the Tuffy imagery doesn't seem to show anything
